With the recent change in detail level, etc, is 21c diversifying? Will there now be a Wally World Grade and a Collectors Grade?
It works for several other manufacturers, and as I recall, 21st was playing around with the idea before with some limited issue collector's pieces (Corsairs, for one) that I don't ever recall seeing make the open market. And in many cases, the same general tooling could be used for both versions. Change out or add some additional detail pieces (for example a simple molded wheel well on the discount version vs. a detailed multi-piece wheel well with separate hydraulic lines and mechanical details on the collector's version). Obviously there are multiple "price-points" in the market--how else can you have FOV selling a die-cast P-51 for $30, Corgi selling one for $90, and GMP for $150?

It's a common enough concept--I have 1/18 and 1/43 die-cast Ferrari models from the early '90's that range form 1- or 2-piece molded engines (some nothing more than a shaped piece on a flat backing panel) to detailed right down to separate plug wires, hoses, belts, etc. Same with interiors, suspension, etc. The difference is whether the model cost $15 and was made by the truck load, or $100 or more and was limited to a production run of a few hundred or a couple thousand at most.

For you hardcore collectors out there (self included), wouldn't you pay a significant premium for more detailed plane or armored vehicle, especially if is one of a limited production run, possibly with a numbered certificate or such?

Speaking of which, who do we need to hit up to produce lexan display cases up to let's say 30x30x10 inches, maybe with customizable inserts for tarmac, dirt, whatever?

most amusing Grunt1, most amusing... :)

As someone who has been in this hobby from the beginning i can vouch for what TKO said. 21c had re-planned and announced their 262 long before anyone of us had heard of Admiral Toys. So comments implying that 21c are sloppy seconds are completely unfounded. It's a simple case of two different companies developing the same plane around the same time....it's happened twice already and it will probably happen again. (I still need convincing that the two seater was planned from the start though...heh).

Great news on the 2 man crew. I'm looking forward to this plane more than i have any plane in some time......and that's saying alot. Can't wait to see some paint schemes...

(btw...it's not really that cold here right now....around the freezing mark...and no snow. Much colder and snowier in many parts of the US :P ).
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Yeah, for example, like here. And we are still comparatively warm compared to places like the Dakotas! At least we only got a couple inches of lake effect today--but I feel for those poor saps about 15 miles farther north and east :)

I know I'd spend the money for a super detailed 1/18th plane. I know BBI said they toyed with the thought of haveing the removable engine cowling on their F6F along with opening gun bays but they forgot about it because of the fact of the cost it would take to make it along with what it would cost us collectors. The F6F Hellcat will come out next year and I will be no doubt buying one but it would have been cool to have those features.

21st said their Mustangs will soon have the opening wing gun bays which will be cool, but it would have also been cool to see either BBI or 21st have their Mustangs come with removable engine cowlings as well. But oh well they are nice either way.

I've noticed that the more 1/18th planes we see the more detailed they are becoming and thats VERY COOL and I hope they keep it up.

Normaly since I moved down here to South Dakota from North Dakota the winters are much warmer with very light snow fall, sure there are a few bitter cold days, but they are few. 3 years ago I bought a snow thrower and a Skidoo Summit 800 HO and only used it 4 times. Now the winters in North Dakota are a different story they are brutally cold.

As for limited editions I bought a 1/12 Ferrari F50 - Red Version Semi-Assembled a great looking car. Spent a small fortune from a Hong Kong dealer to get it  but its worth it. 8)

We won't even talk about it--I have a die-cast 1/8 scale Ferrari Testarossa and 1/8 F-40, both from Pocher Rivarossi... About $300 each, about 6 months each to build, and about 2 feet long and 25+ pounds each. And now, there are all kinds of custom metal "upgrades" on evil bay... so tempting. I wanted to get the 1/8 F-50 from Pocher, but never found it in the US at reasonable price. So all I have is a variety of 1/18 versions... Nice car, though!!!

Nice pics of the 262 but I still cant figure out why 21st would come out with one when Admiral already has one out. The 2 seater I can understand somewhat but a single seater? But I guess the same can be said about BBI bringing out a Corsair when those were already out on the market by 21st.

Like I said all along... a night fighter and single seat version was planned all along!

Look at the F-104 C & G versions. Look at the new halftracks. I think 21C looks for opportunity to make the variants these days. I think it is a smart move. Throw in a little extra part costs and you get a different plane or vehicle. Pretty slick if you ask me!

Great looking planes.

Maybe they think the market is large enough to support two companies selling the same plane. Of course the paint schemes will be different as well as the level of detail. I’m willing to bet the price will be different as well. If these are selling at Wal Mart for $40 a piece I will certainly grab one of each.

I think 21c has a lot going for it right now and being in Wal Mart means their product will be in just about every town. Maybe that’s why they went ahead with it.

Because they can.

Yellow 7 Looks great!

TKO, I remember you said that the 262 will have one feature that has never been seen before on a 1/18 plane, can you say what it is?
