Yep, I think they are pretty heavily armored too, for an aircraft anyway, think they used to refer to them as "flying tanks" or some such, although you can bring one down with an RPG as the Mujahideen discovered in Afghanistan back in the day.I had a chance to climb around in the Hind while it was undergoing maintenance at Ft. Rucker. The thing is freaking huge!

Yeah, unlike the unrealalistic Hind taking a RPG to the cargo area in the movie Red Dawn. Still a good movie though, but that part always bugged me.ostketten wrote:Yep, I think they are pretty heavily armored too, for an aircraft anyway, think they used to refer to them as "flying tanks" or some such, although you can bring one down with an RPG as the Mujahideen discovered in Afghanistan back in the day.I had a chance to climb around in the Hind while it was undergoing maintenance at Ft. Yeah, I remember that one as well... a bit of smoke pouring out the side doors and so on... Most people who have never served in the military have no clue the tremendous wallop that an RPG can deliver, the concussion alone can kill quite effectively if it detonates in a tight space like the interior of a copter, never mind the fragments from the rocket body and the jet of molten plasma designed to eat through armor plate, nasty...very nasty.Yeah, unlike the unrealalistic Hind taking a RPG to the cargo area in the movie Red Dawn. Still a good movie though, but that part always bugged me.

I would have thought the RPG would have cripled the Hind and brought it down or at least killed the pilots, but for it to just shake it off (in a maner of speaking) and keep going, was a little far fetched.
Does anyone know what type of Helicopter they used as the base for those Hinds in Red Dawn? I only rember the angular shape of the cockpit which no Hind has.

Aferg is right on about the Rambo Hind but I am still not sure about the Red Dawn Helo. S-55 could be the base platform though.aferguson wrote:i believe they used a French Puma in Rambo and i thought they did in Red Dawn too but others say it was a heavily modified Sikorsky S-55. I'd have to see the movie again and look at the rotor hub/engine area. That would give it away.

I saw Red Dawn tonight and noticed the Hinds in Red Dawn couldn't be Sikorsky S-55. The cockpit, engine cowling, tail boom, tail rotor, and cargo hold were not like a S-55, so I did some searching on the web. Found out that they were in fact SA 330 Pumas. A much larger helicopter than the S-55 and the tail and engine cowling are a prefect match. Just thought some of you might want to know.lsc1002 wrote:Aferg is right on about the Rambo Hind but I am still not sure about the Red Dawn Helo.
