Thanks for your nice comments. 'Steel' yep the tanks are 1/16th, since we hold battles with the 1/16th tanks, but we use 1/18th stuff to enhance the display. We are working on adding new things all the time.

Very cool display. Your mom is going to be really mad when she finds out what you did to her plastic Christmas tree.

HaHa, yeah, lucky I have an understanding wife; actually, she knows once I get ideas like that, resistance is useless! One 8ft xmas tree sure makes a whole lot of XD sized trees, and with wire stems, they are easy to poke into the ground.
I also plan to have some allied planes 'flying' around, but I'm still wrestling with the idea of drilling holes in the fuselage so I can sit them on metal rods stuck in the ground. :(

I love the idea of some planes flying.
What about two or three Metal poles, and some wire? From that you could hang planes if you spanned the wire over your airfield. I guess easy for me to say, but I have been thinking of ways to hang some bbi paras without holes in the ceiling and I found an old Chap Mei Para that comes with a string and two vices for just that. :D

Digger, I have been kicking that idea around too, the only drawback is that we have our events at a public museum. Now as it is, the kids can't resist playing with the cones placed around the perimeter of the 'battlefield', much less, staying on 'their side' of the cones. So the thought of having poles near the sides of the battlefield supporting a wire or fishing line across the field, with XD planes hanging off it sends shivers down my spine, I just know some kid is going to want to give the pole a good ole shake!

Intreper,It's not a dumb question, I'm happy to explain. First, we use Tamiya 1/16th scale 'full option' tanks equipped with full engine and weapon sound effects. As well, they are equipped with an infra-red combat system which records infra-red 'hits' and imparts 'damage' on the hit vehicle.
Tanks can be set to 'heavy', 'medium' or 'light', 'heavy setting, (Tigers) means a tank can fire an infra-red 'shell' every nine seconds and it takes 9 incoming 'hits' to kill it. Medium setting ,(Sherman & T34) enables a tank
to fire an infra-red shell every 5 seconds, and takes 5 incoming hits to kill it.
When hit by an enemy 'shell' the following things happen:
LED indicators flash
The tank 'shudders' back and forth slightly and emits an explosion sound
Engine noises change to a 'damaged' sound.
The tank loses speed as it becomes progressively more damaged until, on the final 'kill shot' you get a big 'explosion', and the tank shuts down, you're dead!
The infra-red system works up to 30 metres (reduced in sunlight), if you are more that 3 metres away from a target tank, you need to hit one of the four 'square points' on the turret; the barrel, the turret rear and halfway between on both sides in order to score a hit. Closer than 3 metres, it does not matter which direction a hit comes from.
Apart from that, there are various strategies you learn as you go; overall, It's a lot of fun, and gets the adrenalin pumping.
We have round robin (everybody plays everybody) knock out tournaments, with a final between the highest ranked players. As well we have multiple tank (allied vs german etc) battles.
Also we have 'king of the hill', (everybody against everybody) where the last tank alive wins. It's a bit like survivor, you can form alliances, but you can never trust your allies, as eventually, it's you or them!
Theres a couple of clubs, BAT and SCAT in your area that have much better set-ups than we do over here, but we are working on it.
Hope that helps!
Neville
