FOV Hurricane Mystery....

Post by p51 » Sat Jan 07, 2006 1:05 am

So, I was at Target the other day, and I was looking through the FOV 1:72 scale aircraft. Mostly the series one paris of Corsairs and Hurricanes, all which I had. But one caught my eye, a new looking Hurricane. Aside from the fact that the box was slightly torn (which was weird) and seemed to look different than most boxes, the Hurricane was in a light almost desert looking colors with the bottom having a black and white side much like the XD Spitfire ZPA. The top side of this Hurricane looks much like the colors of the XD RAF P-40, with just a J in white letters and a serial of PZ865 on the fuselage. But the biggest thing I noticed, it's HEAVILY weathered. Like really really weathered, none of the other 1:72 aircraft are weathered at all. This one has weathering from the props to the engine to the antenna.

I checked the FOV website, and they don't have this one listed at all, nor any hints to highly weathered 1:72 series... especially when the series 2 aircraft pairs haven't even shown up around here.

I just opened it a few hours ago, and once I pulled it out I went in and grabbed the instruction manual... and it was for the Corsair! Not only that, but the tag on the window says 'France 1940', which is the darker green colored Hurricane pictured at the top of the row on the backside. This only made me even more puzzled as maybe this was not supposed to be found in stores?

Anyone have an idea what this is? A new series?

I would say you got some new Hurricane in an early North Africa scheme. It is either just being released or has yet to be and one slipped out ahead of schedule. As for the weathering, there was a similar observation made in another thread on this forum that indicated FOV may be including some of their "Enthusiast" grade aircraft and vehicles (which feature heavier weathering) in "Action" grade boxes and going to the big retailers. Personally, I have seen an enthusiast grade Stuka (white winter cammo version) at Target and a weathered 1:32 M2 Bradley (Kuait 1991 version) at TRU.

The one in the below link was purchased from panache place in a case assortment back in late October. I don't think this paint scheme is pictured on the back of the box if I remember correctly but I could be wrong.

Mystery Hurricane

Post by lightning2000 » Sat Jan 07, 2006 5:53 pm

Hi,
Well, the plane is listed on the FOV web site. Here's the URL:

http://www.forcesofvalor.com/product.aspx?pid=160

According to FOV, this plane was attached to the RAF's No. 1 Squadron, then engaged against the Luftwaffe in the Battle for France. Note sure if its accurate, but this is what they claim. Hope this helps...

One other thing that bears further scrutiny. I never saw a camo pattern like that on the underside of the plane. Upon closer inspection, it also looks like two dfferent roundels were applied to the plane. My guess is that somehow one of the wings received a darkened part while the other side received the correct pattern (probably the white pattern is correct). I dont know if that makes the plane special or not -- thats for you to decide...

That is the plane I found a while back at Target also and was pondering the same questions.

Mixed up descriptions/packing??

Post by Horsa » Tue Jan 24, 2006 1:31 pm

I seriously think FOV may have mixed up the description and packing of these two planes:

http://www.forcesofvalor.com/product.aspx?pid=162

http://www.forcesofvalor.com/product.aspx?pid=160

The latter in a North Africa scheme if I ever saw one. I have the Corgi version of this plane in 1/72. Not sure about the two-color underside in North Africa, but it was used in the Battle of France/Britian, I think.

Here's the Corgi Hurricane I have:

I could be wrong, but I thought the cannons added to Hurricanes was done after the Battles of France and Britian. In fact, I thought this tank-buster was developed for the target rich open spaces of the desert. I wish FOV had done a non-TBing Hurricane.
