Vulgar not to play devils advocate, I want a phantom a hella lot as well, but
The Crusader had the highest KILL ratio! I think its a disservice to any vietnam air war fan NOT get the MIg master and phantom in 1/18!!
To me if there is a phantom theres gotta be a sader, plus its cheaper to make!
But don't get me wrong I want a phantom a whole lot too!

I'd gladly buy either one. There's no doubt about that.
The Phantom has secure place in aviation history for a lot of the reasons mentioned above. I wonder what evaluations BBI or 21st has done regarding cost vs. return for a F-4.
Certainly the cost to manufacture would be higher than normal. But I think the price point could be higher too. Also, it just seems to me that with all the repaint opportunities, both for US and internationally, it could do quite well abroad too (like I'm sure the F-104 is).
Anyway, I can only speculate on the business decision.
But, damn, I sure hope it gets made someday soon.

Better as an interceptor and strike fighter, but hands down the F-8 was the best dogfighter, I can't really put fault on the phantom though, it was made plainly to intercept, the sader was made outright to dogfight. Theres a reason it was called MIG Master!
The Philippines also used the F-8. They had an interesting 2 tone low viz blue livery.
I am thinking perhaps the phantom could be sold at airports and embassies of the countries it served or still served in? Imagine, travelers walking into Osaka seeing a JASDF 1/18 F-4@Duty Free!!

I'd be interested to hear from others on this board regarding the pros and cons of different modern jets vs. the F-4 i.e. why a toy manufacturer should chose one over the other in terms of historical significance and marketability.

It is a little bit smaller than the F-15 and F-14. Therefore it might be a bit cheaper to manufacture and tool. It also has less moving surfaces than the F-14. The dual cockpits are the only snag I think they could hit, those might be a bit difficult, especially since the RIO/WSO spot is cramped enough as is!
Its got more historical significance than ANY of the teen fighters, arguably in general more recognizable, and it is famous.
All the Aces in vietnam were phantom pilots. Many Aces in the IIRIAF and IAF are phantom pilots. Or were at some point.
The only reasoning I could see them putting out a modern jet over this, would be because of modernism but thats really about it.

I have seen worse......back home the local paper had a picture of some of the mechanics DISMANTLING a F-14D with a chainsaw. SAD indeed! Especially when you know a lot of the D and B airframes still have a lot of flight hours left in their airframes and that the tomcat in itself never reached its full potential due to budgetary constraints.
Ah well at least it ended up on a good note!
And F-4s will be flying for a long time to come, Greece, S Korea, Japan, Turkey and Iran still use it, same with Germany and to an extent, the US with one of its wings being a training wing for the luftwaffe.

You could say that for a lot of WW2 warbirds as well... like even the wing spars for the B-17 Flying Fortress... or the cracks in the SNJs... but they still did. I suspect we will see F-14s fly again... maybe not in the hands of civilians... but just like these new flying QF-4 Phantoms... it's done by the military.
True, anybody who has the money can do anything. Seeing a Fairey Gannett fly is a miracle in itself!! Could you imagine just how complex that plane is with the contra-rotating propellers and the turbine engine that powers them?? Where do you get spare parts? I found this link to Oshkosh showing the Gannett there. This aircraft is currently broke in Gander enroute back to the UK. The Polar Air Museum that owned it went out of business and it was sold. I hope it makes it back!!
