BBI Mustang advice please!!

Post by trigger1 » Sat May 09, 2009 10:29 am

I only own 1 Mustang and it's a 21C Old Crow. There are no QC issues with the plane and I think it looks great. I'm looking to buy another Mustang and I really like some of the BBI offerings.

With the 21C collapse (and now apparent resurrection) dominating the forum a bit I haven't noticed much talk of BBI. I understand the Corsairs are wonderful and it seems that many members prefer them over the 21c versions. Are there any common problems or flaws that I should be aware of if I decide on a BBI Mustang ?? Thanks for any help.

I purchased BBI's Donald Duck P-51, and I was really inpressed with the plane. I only own 2 1:18 aircraft a 21st BF-109G and the BBI P-51. I feel the the BBI plane is more detailed, and has some nice weathering. I'm no a rivet counter, but I'm sure some members on this board, could tell you which plane is more accurate.

TRIGGER1:

There's been a lot of discussion on SSHQ about the BBI Mustang's flaws:

1. The wing dihedral (from the front view, the wings should tip upwards slightly)
2. The extended landing gear should rake forwards slightly
3. The wing pylons are located in the wrong position.
4. The rear wheel is located incorrectly.
5. There is no wing-mounted pitot tube (21st Mustang has the same problem)
6. Some say the weathering and rivets are excessive.

I have two BBI Mustangs ("Cripes A' Mighty 3rd" and "Donald Duck")) and two 21st Mustangs ("Big Beautiful Doll" and "Petie 2nd") and I like the BBI Mustangs a lot more.

these p-51 comparison threads always go the same way- only now the "just buy the damn thing" advice usually appears before the end of the first page! Get as many of each scheme as you can and you (anyone) won't give a pitootie about the differences

The sculpting on the 21c P-51s is a little more accurate - correct wing dihedral, landing gear rake, tail wheel, and the smooth wing surface. The BBI plane is over-rivited. However, the BBI plane has sturdier construction, better quality control, and the cockpit is very nice. It also has a great pilot figure. If you are aiming to get one, go for it.

With limited funds and rising prices on some of these planes I just don't want to make an avoidable mistake. Thanks for input fellas. 8)

I have the same plane, and it's probably my favorite on the ceiling... The detail's incredible of course, but for me the kicker is the deco. I love the DD and the striping.

Can't go wrong with the Donald Duck Mustang IMO.

I like my BBI "Cripes A' Mighty 3rd" much more than my BBI "Donald Duck"--if anything because it has a lot of history (Preddy) and a lot of Preddy's kill markings on the blue paint.
