Ha, went to Hubhobby looking for this and came home with nothing. I was looking through Target for the F-16 on their site and luckily found this sucker for $35 w/free shipping. Sweet deal.

I have been comparing my new Donald Duck to my 21st Century Big Beautiful Doll.

I'm asking veteran owners of 1/18 P-51s if my evaluation, partly based on other SSHQ comments, in addition to my own, is correct---BBI P-51s are more detailed than 21C P-51s but are less accurate because:

1. Question: Do real P-51s have the large amounts of rivets like BBI's or do real P-51s have smooth surfaces closer to 21C's P-51?
2. The BBI P-51 has inaccurate wing dihedral (which doesn't bother me), landing gear rake problem and wing pylon location.
3. The BBI has antenna wire (which I removed) which some P-51s didn't have.
4. BBI pilot has "US Air Force" on jacket (not US Army Air Force")
5. BBI P-51 has inaccurate, excessive weathering.

However, comparing the BBI P-51 to the 21C P-51, I like the paint scheme of Big Beautiful Doll, but when I hold my BBD, it feels less solid with flopping flaps and wobbling wings (it should have 4 screws, not 2). The BBI P-51 looks much better because of the weathering and when I hold it, it feels more solid and substantial without the shakiness of the 21C P-51.

Bottom line: I wish BBI made its own version of Big Beautiful Doll.

I welcome other comments on the 2 P-51s.

I have read in a number of posts on this fourm that the BBI Mustang is inaccurate because it is over riveted. However, I sit in a different camp on this issue. I have seen a few wartime color photographs of P-51's which show many rivets.(Something has to hold the plane together!) If you look at the turned down flaps on the wings of this P-51 you see heavy riveting. Riveting can also be seen on the tail of the Mustang in the foreground. Granted if you have a P-51 in Olive Drab camoflage(Old Crow) the paint would probably fill in/mask the rivets some, but the natural metal mounts that 21st Century has issued, although sleek lack the authentic detail that BBI added. (although I am sure the scale of the rivets on the BBI P-51 could be debated).

5. BBI P-51 has inaccurate, excessive weathering.

On the contrary, Wartime fighters saw a large amount of wear and tear. Based at gloomy fields in England where rain and mud were frequent annoyances.(If you look at the BBI mustangs tires they are muddy.) Combat planes went through a lot of engine strain as well, and would leak oil. Exhaust and gun stains would form quickly as well. A lot of the paint that was applied such as the OD camo and Invasion Stripes were painted with great speed without any primer. They had sloppy edges and quicky would chip and fade.

I remember when 21st century used to weather some of their early releases they received criticism about their weathering technique. Roy Sutherland said that it was better to release the model without the weathering, so the collector could custom it, as it would be easier to add weathering than remove it.

Late last night I continued to look at more replies and the more I looked at, including yours, the more I feel a lot better about Donald Duck and its authenticity. All I have to do now is relocate the wing pylons.

I cut the tab off and glued the pylon back on in the correct position:

Also, if you cut off the center tab on the flaps, they will drop all of the way:

I just relocated my pylons about 30 minutes ago with Super Glue. I haven't touched my flaps--I like them up. My BBD flaps will flop with the slightest jostle, so I'm glad my Donald Duck's flaps are firmly in place.
