This is what Area 21 says Sabrefan:
All future D model Mustang releases in the Extreme Wings line will be based on this new tooling, and the original Mustang tooling that started it all will be retired. Production is completed, so the first schemes should start hitting the shelves in the next month or two.
I agree that the original D model is by far the worst 1/32 mold, but part of me wishes they would have gone with a different plane given the recent B/C version. I am dying for a P-38. That being said I will probably end up with four or five of these. One nice thing about the shown scheme is that we need more Brits in the skies. So until we see the Typhoon and Spitfire release, this will do just fine.
MightyMustang, welcome to the club. I have recently been delving into XD aircraft but these smaller planes are really where my heart lies. Walk towards the light...

Wow! Glad to see 21c revisit this plane! We sorely need a decent and affordable P-51D in 1:32, given the state of both the original 32x and FOV planes. I don't mind that first scheme and hopefully these will show up before too long! The 32x P-51B/C has been one of my favorite 32x planes to date and its scary to think I might be soon picking up a bunch more P-51s
BTW, where's the new FW-190A?

I'm happy for this because while I like my B/C model, I really really like the D model (and it's such an iconic plane that it was necessary to retool it so they could sell a ton of repaints). Too bad the landing gear doors have the same shortness as on the B/C models, and hopefully this one will have the radio mast. I also want teardrop tanks. Why am I complaining so much? I like this. I'll wait for a bare metal paint scheme though...
I think you guys will get your cake and eat it too when it comes to new molds in 32x. The line is super popular with you folks! The P-51D REALLY REALLY needed to be fixed. It is such a loved airplane. 21C simply could not ignore the need to make that plane better.
Its not like 21st is going to go back and retool the entire 32x line. I happen to know for a fact that all new planes are waiting in the wings (pun intended). More to come in 08 for sure!
Oh and for you folks who wanna see a bare metal P-51D scheme... Hang on till tomorrow morning! -you guys are going to see an all new scheme never before done. Get ready for the S3 scheme.

That S1 scheme is just about the funkiest paintscheme I've ever seen on a P-51... Not sure that I like it all that much. What about revisiting some of the schemes already doen on a 32x - or even 1:18th plane? Hopefully the S2 version is a bit more tonned down.

Awesome!
That NMF looks sweet! I've always liked the 5th AF giant stripes. One thing of interest, the -51Ds usually had an extra pair of stripes than the -47s and others.

I love the paint schemes! Although I'd love to see an Indonesian P-51D. Neat looking indeed. Odd, but I like the way this particular one is done, it looks like it almost says "Sally" below the canopy.
