F-86F-30-NA Fighter Bomber

Post by Folkwulfe » Wed Aug 08, 2007 6:58 pm

I started this monster awhile back, but due to several (here comes the excuses!!) unforeseen circumstances (he got lazy and frustrated) I had to push this aside (or take a hammer to it and make splinters) and wait for a better day. Well that day finally arrived (he finally got tired of shoving this thing around and decided to finish it) and I thought I'd share (he means gloat) some of the progress.

I messed up the upper port wing and had to respray that area. While I'm sitting here typing, the last coat of Future is drying before I decal the wings (again). The red/white/blue fin flashes have yet to be painted on....that's next tomorrow when I have better light to see by. By Sunday, the entire aircraft should be done (we've heard that one before!). Film at eleven....

BTW.....Lair, sorry buddy that this has taken so long. I hope I can do your decals justice. Hey MIG29......finally got one you didn't....HA!

I remember you talking about this one a while back. Good to see it is almost finished. How did you do the markings?

Markings

Post by Folkwulfe » Wed Aug 08, 2007 9:06 pm

Actually....I did the research and Lair over at Vexillarius Decals (shameless plug here) custom made them for me. I couldn't be happier with the results. The decals are spot on in size and color and go on in a snap.

The markings are of "K-King" serial 604 of the South African Air Force number 2 Squadron. After transitioning into F-86F-30 aircraft in early '53, 2 Sqdrn flew fighter-bomber missions beside the USAF until the armistace and a little later. They were the only NATO/SEATO nation to fly the F-86 in the Korean Conflict besides the US. Other nations adopted F-86 types after, but not during. The SAAF flew ex-USAF Sabers and retained the ID bands exactly like the USAF aircraft. Flying from Oson AB the "Flying Cheetahs" were legendary for both fighting hard...and playing hard! It is in their honor that I decided to do K-King (with alot of help from people like Lair!!!)

I always appreciate hearing from all of you. It is because of alot of you that I keep hacking away and maybe one day...hope that I can be as good as most of you are today. As an aside....the F/B is as good as finished. The bombs and bomb racks were done this afternoon and a few very small details are all that's left. As promised, the first set of "glamour shots" went to Lair who made the markings....and made the mod worth while. I should be ready for the unveiling tomorrow evening....she's a beaut. Came out even better than I hoped. Film at eleven....

Here ya go....

Details you cannot see...
The bomb rack pylons are plastic, but the shackles are brass.
Both bomps are removeable by two brass pins into the shackles.
Safety wires are on both bomb nose fuses (too small for the camera to pick out).

Details yet to add...
Sway brace on both drop tanks.
Fuel dump tube on the left aft tail.
Darken the gun blast door panels to offset the metal appearance.
Rework the interior of the speed brake housings.

I warned you this could be like Frankenstein's baby...didn't I?

OH SNAP~ I need to pay better attention... Whats really impressive is that you can't tell that they are decals. It looks like you painted it on... either that, or you really do work for some secret outfit outta Hong Kong and just ain't freakin' tellin us. You are tenacious in your work, what can I say. MiG-29 pretty much pulled a 'Kvotchur" after seen that! The Arms race just got a bit more heated bro!
