M48A3 conversion to M48A5?

Post by tko24 » Sun Feb 20, 2005 8:35 pm

Hi,I'm new to this forum.I'de like to know if anyone has converted the XD M48 to an A5 model?I have 2 and I'm thinking of converting one to an A5,but I'm stumped on how to do the 105mm barrel as I'm not a scratch builder.Any ideas or talented scratch builders for the barrel? My painting skills are ok.Also does anyone make 1/18 or 1/16 scale aftermarket armor decals? Thanks.

Finally another Wisconsinite! I would be interested in building the barrel for you. Price would depend on the amount of detail. I'm not looking to get rich, I enjoy scratch building. I need really good pics and some rough dimensions. The better the reference material the better the model. What are the chances it is the same gun used on an M-60? If it is, I might just go measure the one in Appleton. I just want to note that if it has a taper the length of the barrel I may abort. I just have not had much luck with a barrel half that size.

Almost forgot, Verlinden makes WWII decals in all scales including 120mm, which is about 1/16 scale.

I know they are in there, I didn't see them at a glance.

The M48A5's 105mm is the same as the M60's. You will also need a new lower profile cmmanders coupla. I am not sure but I think most M48A5 also use the newer track block pattern, sort of like two ovals, instead of the the chevron style.

Another interesting set of mods would be an Iraeli M48 with a 105mm and an Israeli M113.

M48A3 to an A5

Yes the barrel should be identicle to an M60.How much would you charge for making the barrel? That would be great if you could do it.I dont want to tackle the commanders copula right now.I can do the camoflage paint with my airbrush but I would still like to replace vehicle markings which is why I'de like to find some decals.

I did some searches yesterday looking for an M48A5, It looks to me that the barrel has a slight taper to it. I have a FOV 1/32 M-60. But measuring a die-cast model for the pattern may not be wise. I would guess that I could build that barrel for $10+ shipping. I will attempt it. If it turns out, I will send you pics and you can decide if it is acceptable. Something I would like to try is resin casting the end of the barrel with the rifling, maybe a 1/4 inch deep.

I would like to build the LS-90 turret used on the LAV. My guess is, this is the same British built gun?? So if you decide not to purchase it, I will still have a use for it.
