I am not that familiar with this helicopter and was wondering what the large cylindrical structure was behind the engine shroud. It looks like some kind of signal light but it seems too large and I can't imagine they want to be that visible.

I'm sure others know a lot more about it than I do, but I believe it's the "disco light" device for confusing incoming infrared (heat-seeking) missiles.

Tinman is correct. It "projects" an IR image away from the helicopter. Don't ask me how this is done.......
