BBD Paint Problems

Post by MightyMustang » Thu Jun 07, 2007 6:30 am

I went to my local hobby shop yesterday and what did I find? Big Beautiful Doll. Thats a rarity because my local hobby shop almost never carrys 1/18th planes from 21st or BBI. Anyway. I saw what others have been saying about the paint problems on the Doll. There seemed to be alot of paint smudges, over spray ect on the BBD that made it seem like it was rushed through production and thats really sad because BBD has an awsome paint scheme and it should have been done a little better. Now that wont prevent me from buying it because one buying it from my local hobby shop saves me alot of money and 2 I can fix the paint problems. But its funny because they also had the Bunker Hill Corsair from 21st and Old Crow and neither of those had any paint issues. I forgot to mention there was alot of scratches on the canopy of BBD as well.

I'm not ranting in fact I'm very happy 21st re-released BBD in the new tool form because next to Old Crow its one of my favorite Stangs. 21st has to slow down though when they are producing product because quality suffers.

Anyone agree with me on this?

Sounds like it might have been a bad batch - that seems to happen quite often with 21c planes. Some will be pristine while others will be not quite so...

It must have been a bad batch tman because all 5 BBD's were the same. So in essence I passed on BBD. I have Old Crow, HHH and Ridge Runner 3 and all 3 Mustangs are near perfect paint wise. 21st has to quit rushing products because its showing in the quality of the paint apps. I have yet to get a BBI plane with paint problems and I can bet you that the Hellcat will be close to perfect paint wise.

What about Tendor Terror - don't you have that?

You were whining when the BBD and TT didn't arrive when you expected, so funny you would also say they should stop rushing their planes.

Ah digger, YES I did get Tender Terror, I got that along time ago. As for BBD I dont remember ever whining about that Mustangs arrival and I do feel that BBD WAS rushed. The paint problems I think are proof of that my freind. If you dont like what I have to say digger then dont say anything at all. I think we are have a right to say what are feelings are. This is a free country after all, it was the last time I checked I think.

I think the issue here MM is the fact that nearly everything you say you sooner or later will contradict. At least that is my personal observation over the years.

Case in point...... you tell Digger, "If you don't like what I have to say then don't say anything at all", and in the very next sentence you state,"I think we all have a right to say what our feelings are." Contradictory? I would say.

I can only speak for myself, but I find this type of personality extremely annoying, hence the fact that I rarely respond to your postings. Its hard to tell whether you are coming or going and what is true or what is BS.

MM, I'm sure you are a hell of a nice guy and we are all glad you are here to share your views on the hobby. The more the merrier, right? All I ask is that you think about what you are about to post, before you post it.

BTW, Yes, this is still a free country.

"What is true and what is BS"? There isnt a thing I have said on here that is BS. I stand behind everything I say. Coming or going? After the Hellcat I'm going buddy so dont worry about that. Then you wont have to read my posts anymore. I tell things the way I see it, like it or not.

MM,

My last post wasn't intended to tick you off or run you off from the forum. If this is the way you choose to respond, then you do so at your accord. As you say, I too stand behind my statements. How you interpret them is out of my control. If me voicing my opinion causes you to react in this manner, then so be it, there is nothing I can do.

I am sorry that it upsets you when people exercise their right to voice their opinions. It is a two way street you know.

Has anyone picked up a BBD P-51 and been happy with the paint job? I would like to get one, but I have not seen the model in person yet.

Actually, my BBD's paintjob is flawless. Too bad it fell apart because they didn't used enough glue on the fusalage.

Here's the irony played upon me.

When Bad Cat had the BBD Stang up for pre-order, I think I was the second person in line to get their order in. As soon as Bad Cat's warehouse received the first shipment, I was notified they were shipping mine the next day. I opened. I opened it. I slid it out of the box leaving the plane in its tray. I was disgusted. I sent it back asking for a better one. The second one was one small iota better, but still terrible. But I kept it. I figured this would make a great project for me to completely improve the looks of it and give it a showbird look and finish. This was all back in late March.

Fast forward to yesterday June 18. I'm on my way down to Hilton Head from Charleston to inspect and test four houses in that area. I see a super WalMart on the way in Beaufort and pull in figuring what the heck. Never been to this Walmart before. Head to toys and oh my gosh!! There was a shelf full of Big Beautiful Doll stangs!!!! Every single one of them on that shelf looked wonderful!! Way better than the ones I received from orders in March. I think I spent 30 minutes scowering through the 10 planes until I found one with ZERO flaws!! It was magnificent looking. The only thing left to do to this Stang is Future floor shine coat the canopy windows and give it a clear coat all over it and she'll look like she was on display at the Oshkosh airshow.

So I guess their are some decent BBD's out there. I was just lucky to hit the jackpot. As for my older BBD she'll make a great project turning it into the Moonbeam McSwine Mustang.

I guess I will keep looking for a BBD Mustang at Walmart. Sounds like a hit or miss on the paint work, but glad to hear there are some nice ones out there.

Just to help you recollect, below is your post in a topic you started titled "Getting Tired of Waiting"

MightyMustang wrote:Hey guys. I'm getting irritated. I called Historic Aviation 2 weeks ago and they said that the 21st Century Mustangs Old Crow and BBD would be in the first week of April and they told me to call them then. So I have. NOW I'm told they have been delayed until mid April! I know there is delays but I'm getting tired of it. Its getting to the point where I'm getting ready to say heck with it and just be happy to have the Mustangs I do and go on with getting other aircraft. I got an email from Bad Cat saying that BBD has arrived in their warehouse but it still shows pre-order on their website. I'll have to call them to see whats going on. But if theres a delay for Old Crow I'd really like to know why. I was told it was in production along with Tender Terror so I cant see why there would be a long delay. Both planes had the same paint scheme. All 21st would have had to do is make different decals for it. Sorry guys for the rant but I'm just sick of seeing delays and so fourth.

Anyone else feel as I do?

Guys, drop it--please. We're here to enjoy the hobby and have fun. Not to point fingers and say "I told you so". We reserve that right for WM, TRU, and the manufacturers, if warranted :)

Hey! What's up with finding 10 BBDs at a Wal Mart? I wish any of the 7 in my immediate area would get even half that many 1:18 planes. The current record since December has been 4 - and they were all of one type! There's plenty of 32x winter 109Fs, however. Oh well, here's hoping for the eventual P-51s and P-40s and the like :P

Went to a WM on 75 & Spring Valley and found 4 BBD P-51 sitting on the shelf. As well there were 3 Huffs, 4 Russian Migs and 2 NK Migs.
Have not seen any BBD yet at other WMs in the area.

I said I wasnt going to talk about this anymore but guys I have to because I am now EATING MY WORDS!!! Today for my B-Day a freind of mine brought me over what else for my birthday? Big Beautiful Doll. And what do I see when I open up the box? A near flawless paint job! God I feel like an idiot. After condeming 21st for sloppy paint jobs on BBD I get this. I asked my freind where he got it and he said from his local Walmart. I guess it goes to show it all depends on the batch that comes from the factory as "tman" once said. BBD now holds the top slot with my 1/18th planes replacing Marines Dream. Its not as detailed I know but the paint job is just sweet and it pretty much spells doom for what remains of my Mustang squadron because I once said if I could find the perfect Mustang the rest would go on the "for sale block" and tomorrow night at my local model show thats whats goin to happen. So once again I eat my words and look like a fool. As my dad has always said "You better think about what your are goin to say before you say it and if you have nothing good to say then dont say it at all". This is the case that proves those words true.

I finally found two BBDs at a Wal Mart relatively near my area :D It is a fantastic scheme. Both examples were quite nice, with VERY minor paint flaws. The checkers on the wing on both examples I saw seemed to be a little misaligned, but that could be a production mistake... I did not get the plane (even for the Wal Mart price) as I really do have too many P-51s

I'm a ground pounder at heart but it's hard to pass up anything new. You guys all had me on high alert so when I did finally find a BBD I spent at least five minutes running my eyes over it just knowing I'd find something. :? :? :?

But, I couldn't find anything so I took her home. 8)

I got a BBD the other day. Paint was fine with no noticeable issues. I did notice that the gear doors were a bit hard to close. I even broke off one little tip but they were so tight it didn’t even matter. I think it’s a great plane. I love it.
