1/18 Type 65 37mm AAA gun

This was discussed a while ago in this thread:

Turns out the gun is actually 1/18 scale (or very, very close). These guns were used extensively in Vietnam and also, i believe, by the various Arab nations during the various A-I and Gulf wars.

I bought one for $139 shipped. Pricey i know but i love artillery and felt the uniqueness of this piece justified the cost.

You can contact the seller if you're interested in getting one...i think he can get lots more (just a hunch). Tell him about the 'deal' he gave me and you should be able to get it for the same price.

Mine won't arrive for a few weeks...i'll give a review of it when it does.

$139 included shipping, no i didn't get the tanks since they are too small and yes it scales to 1/18 scale or very, very close (at worst 1/19)

Come on guys. If Jane Fonda didn't stick her nose into other people's business what would she do all day? I would really like to know what you think of the AA gun Aferg. I also am an artillery nut. Keep us posted.

I think the AAA Gun would make a nice addition to all the 21st vietnam stuff that will be coming out, if I had the money I would buy one also.

received this gun today. Overall impression is quite good. Very detailed and accurate to the pictures i've seen. Nice green colour. Well put together and surprisingly heavy. Definitely 1/18 scale.

What kind of working details does it have? everything works except the control wheels for the gun don't actually turn.

Can you set it up in a firing position? yes or limbered pos'n, either.

Does the gun elevate and turn, etc.? yes gun moves well, good range of motion in elevation, very solid feel, full 360 degree traverse.

The only thing i don't like is the white wall tires but i can paint over those. Will look really good with some NVA troops crewing it.

Recommended if you don't mind shelling out the dough.

It doesn't seem to say in the auction, but do you think that 105mm Howitzer is 1:18 scale? Price is about the same as Aferg's AA gun

if you click on the images you'll see a scale there the type 59 is saying 1:18

go to www.altavista.com and use the babel translator for the webpage it's slow but mostly translated.

Anybody figure how to order one Type 59 big box version let me know and I'll send you money when you order yours

The Type 59 Tank is not 1/18....it's more like 1/24. That piece is what lead us to discover the AAA gun.

i believe the type 59 is 1/28.....why it was made to a smaller scale i don't understand.

The 105mm is 1/32.

I picked up one of these from the same seller.

It arrived quickly, but unfortunately both of the rear wheels were broken off. It was rather strange. The way they were positioned in the package, I just assumed they had been intentionally removed for transport and never gave it a thought. Once I got everything out of the box, I realized that they were indeed broken off. Package did not appear to have been opened by customs so factor that out.

The packaging job was reasonable but probably could have been a little better for such a heavy/fragile item.

The seller swears he did not ship this broken so I will have to take his word on that.

There is a also a small part with a gauge that was loose in the package. I can't tell if it was broken off or just came loose from it's original mount since I haven't yet figured out exactly where it goes!

Just a suggestion for folks: if you decide to drop the big bucks on this, demand utmost care in packaging or you'll end up with a ~$200 broken model and that ain't fun.

Little off topic but I bought a cool book today titled "Armor of the Vietnam War (2) Asian Forces". It's the first book I've found on armor used by the NVA during Vietnam. It has many good photos, all black and white, of NVA armored units in action/training.

After looking and reading through this book, I saw another reason why a T-34 needs to be made in 1/18 scale. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but the T-34-85 was one of the main tanks in use by NVA armored forces during Vietnam. So the T-34 could be used in two lines of our current 1/18 offerings. A Russian version for our WWII collection and a NVA version for our Vietnam collection. Just another really good reason for this tank to be done in 1/18.

Another interesting thing I saw in one of the photographs were German PAK 40s being towed behind NVA trucks in a 1960 military parade. The caption for the picture stated that the NVA had set up several anti-tank battalions and equipped them with the German PAK 40s that had been captured by Russian forces in 1945. The Russians delivered the PAK 40 to the NVA 10 years later. I haven't found anything yet showing that they were still in use by the time the US got involved in Vietnam. If they were, then we have another use for our PAK 40s....

No , that does not surprise me at all. The NVA used alot of captured German WWII equipment the Russians had left over , including MG-42's. The NVA used practically anything they could get their hands on.

Hopefully , those 12 new figures 21st. promises us later this year will be of the "Platoon" line.

Got the same book last week and was thinking the same thing about the 21stCT PaK 40s. BTW even more of topic I've almost finished Marrett's book and you were indeed right it is a great read, also try and get hold of Squadron Signal (SS) No. 6033 Armour In Vietnam by Jim Mesko it complements the Concord books quite well as do SS No. 6053 & 6057 Ground War Vietnam Volumes 1 & 2 (still waiting for volume 3)

Are there any manufacturer markings on these guns, as I have some Chinese contacts through work and may see if the translation guy here can track these guns down through an alternative route.

what i know is that they are supposedly made in china, for chinese servicemen, available at military gift shops in china. No idea who makes them and they were not intended to be exported.
