1/18 landmine

Post by aferguson » Wed Apr 18, 2007 12:29 pm

This is sort of a fun idea i came up with a few years back that i've been tinkering with today and thought i'd mention it again....wargamers may like the idea.

Some of the Dragon 1/18 german figures came with a tellermine anti tank mine accessory. I glued a mine onto the 'play' button of a digital keychain (this is a keychain that you can record brief reminder messages on). I recorded the sound of an explosion onto the keychain.

I then took a piece of foam about 1 inch thick and hollowed a small section of the underside in the shape of the keychain, making sure to leave a little bit of foam on the topside (ie the hollowed out section does not go all the way through).

Then i just taped the keychain/mine combination in the hollowed out section and flipped it over. You can then drive a vehicle over the foam and if the wheels or tracks go over top of where the mine is the weight will compress the foam a bit, push down on the mine, which in turn presses the play button of the keychain and the explosion sound is heard.

You could paint the foam earth colour, put little shrubs, debris etc on it to make it look more realistic.

No flame or smoke yet...

:D

Sounds like a cool mod to do!!!!!!!!!!!!
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Let me hear your guns!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Your guns! Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: [fires his airplane's guns] AHHHH!

it works perfect. Unless the vehicle drives directly over the mine, it won't 'explode', just like the real thing.

My only concern is how to paint the foam so that it looks good, doesn't disolve during painting and is durable (ie the paint won't wear off with the wear of the tank tracks over it). I'm thinking maybe Krylon paint will work...

Great idea.. Would be a big surprise for a guest if they walked up to the diorama and you pushed the mine. :P

I once used those little rubber things that you flipped over and then which sprung back into shape. You flip it, cover it with dust, then poof! Aferg's idea is much more creative, however
