Which airplanes have incorrect scale?

Post by Black Lion VF-213 » Tue Mar 13, 2007 6:28 pm

Being that I have only been collecting 1:18 since last August, I am very curious to see, based off the members' experience and knowledge, which 1:18 airplanes from 21,AT,&BBI produced are incorrect in scale. Meaning not just...say the length of the wingspan for example, but including the smaller things, lesser known or noticed items, etc. What insight can y'all offer?

Thanks fellas,

Bryce

the BBI F-16 is the worst. It's about 1/16.9 scale overall. The P-38, P-47, P-40 and to a certain extent the 21c corsair all have oversized canopies. The Me-109E is to scale but 'chubby'.

Otherwise, i think everything else is pretty right on, scale-wise.

Man aferg, I didn't know you checked the scale of all the planes-pretty impressive.

WOW, that's a surprise for all those planes with out-of-scale parts.

aferg,

When you mentioned Corsair, I was surprised. I have both the 21st Corsair and the BBI version. When I put them side by side, it appears that the BBI has a larger canopy. I guess then both are too big, especially the BBI.

I haven't noticed the P-38 and P-47 being that I've never had one in my hands, but I can see what you are saying in regards to the P-40. I've looked at my friend's and compared photos. Yep it's a little large. It also appears that the overall shape of the 21st P-40 is a little fat in the middle.

Thanks

Yep, the P-40 is a little fat in the fuselage. Kinda reminds me of a snake that has just ate something  The Cobras look a little large to me next to the Huey. Anyone have an opinion on that one?

the oversized canopies are to accomodate the 1/18 pilots, since plastic pilots aren't as squishy as human pilots and can't fit into tight spaces as well. The first approach 21c took was to make scale cockpits with undersized pilots.

I have a feeling that the F-104's canopy is also overscale but have never bothered to check. The P-40 and P-47 are the most obviously overscale ones.....but i kinda like the look, myself. :)
