i need ordinary string but black in colour. Anyone know where i can find something like that? I need a fair bit of it so colouring ordinary white string is not a great option.

Hobby Lobby sells Nylon thread that is measured in mm (0.4mm- 0.7 mm) which I use for antenna wire and such on model aircraft.. It is very fine and doesn't fray like normal thread..

thread's not going to be thick enough. I need something the thickness of average string, about 1mm or slightly coarser.

I know i can colour white string but i need 27 feet of it so it's going to be a pain. I'd really like it if i could just find black string. I can't believe it should be very hard to find. I've seen it lots of times in my life on various items (eg bbi p-51 and 21c me-109e), just never needed to buy any so i don't know where to get it.

Don't know if they have Michael's (the arts and crafts retailer) stores in Canada, but they would almost certainly have what you are looking for, if they don't have Michael's then look for the Canadian equivalent. WM stores usually have a pretty good arts and crafts section as well, but again I'm not certain if they have Wally stores north of the border. :?:

Aferg,
You can find what your looking for at a commercial appolstery shop. They use incredibly strong course thread to sew heavy materials together. It's strong enough that is hard to break with your hands.

that was very helpful VMF115....gave me some ideas. I looked on ebay and found some bead cord (for stringing bead necklasses) that i think is the size i want. 75 yards of it! Cheap too.

Thanks for your efforts, very appreciated.

As for what i want it for......hm, well, i'm in the process of making a section of battleship deck in 1/18 (front turret and surrounding deck of the HMS Rodney) and i need the black string for the ship's railing.

Just another of my zaney projects. :?

Ha! When I read 27 feet, I thought, is he making a battleship?!

Well he is

Aferg, when your done I really want to see a photo of it

How big will the thing be when done? :?

What did you make it out of?

well, it's just a small section of a battleship, basically just the front turret and surrounding deck. No hull at all just the deck with a turret sitting on it. Even at that the deck section is going to be 6 1/2 feet long by about 5 feet wide....it tapers a bit down to about 4 feet.

I'm going to make it out of bristol board and thick cardboard mostly...sort of a large card model. I'm going to make it fold in the middle so i can hang it up behind a door out of the way, as there's no space available for permanent display. The turret itself will be roughly 22" by 28" by 9", with the 3 gun barrels being about 27" long each.

I'm going to pattern it off of the HMS Rodney as she looked at the time she engaged the Bismarck. It was Rodney that was principally responsible for pulverizing the Bismarck, forcing the Germans to scuttle her.

Anyway, just planning it out has really given me a great impression of just how large battleships really were. Nice to do something nautical for a change. ;)

very nice - just the size of a project like that is overwhelming - the smallest mistake well isnt a small mistake - I cant wait to see the finished product.
