Um...I said A-4 (as in Skyhawk), not F-4.Moth wrote:I craped my pants when I found out about the Starfighter!GooglyDoogly wrote:
Did anyone here honestly jumped for joy and said, "OMFG!!! They're gonna do a Starfighter in 1/18!!!!!" When the F-104 was announced?
If they wanted a Vietnam-era jet that could fit nicely in a wal-mart box (if size is a factor), they could have picked the A-4...![]()
They are making the F-4 now...

Really? You guys liked the Starfighter? I guess I'm in the minority here.
I just couldn't remember if there was massive excitement for this plane when it first came out.
I think the MiG-15 was more talked about than the F-104, or even the new-tooled Mustang. But I could be wrong.

KAGNEW: 15????? Holy crap.....are you building your own Air Wing?

I rememberseeing the 104 before reading about it and just stood in the aisle for many minutes just amazed at the size and detail - I figured - I'll wait awhile and place oneon layaway as I already had a few items on layaway.. and they were gone the next week except for one damaged one that sat for months -
I loved it and still do -

Ich liebe den Geruch von Sturzkampfflugzeug morgens.
104
Best 1:18 scale AC IMO. Have the Marineflieger on display and it gets the most comments by far. The printing, the fit, the size, the pilot..STUKA wrote:I rememberseeing the 104 before reading about it and just stood in the aisle for many minutes just amazed at the size and detail - I figured - I'll wait awhile and place oneon layaway as I already had a few items on layaway.. and they were gone the next week except for one damaged one that sat for months -

While I don't have many of the planes already out, I really don't think I can ever get tired of seeing any airplane. That said, my preference would be: WWI, WWII, then all the rest. I would like to see someone start making 1/18 WWI aircraft.
The ONLY 2 things I ever get tired of seeing are posts on all the boards about paratroopers and Michael Whitmann. These 2 topics have been talked to death. You'd think that the 101st won WWII single handedly and Whitmann scored all the tanks kills for Germany
Both were good, but they were part of a team.

Add me to the list of uninterested in the F-104. Every time I see one I think of Chuck Yeager crashing one @ the end of "The Right Stuff"! I'd rather see an A4 Skyhawk. THAT plane would look sharp in the Blue Angels paint scheme!
As far as the WWII planes go, I've always liked the razorback P-47 over the bubble canopy (Although I'd be tempted to pick up Gabreski's plane is that paint scheme was produced).
It's good that 21st retooled their Mustang because that 1st one was awful! Let's see some re-tooled corsairs (birdcage canopy anyone? and P-38's IWANT THE CORRECT SIZE REAR WHEELS!!!

THE F-104 was in Vietnam as a fighter and bomber
the NV air force would never come up to fight it.
the whole main landing gear is wrong on P-38.it retracts backwards and is about 3" to far back
i would like to see it fixed, but the only way that would happen is if AT or BBi said they were doing a new one

I think it was the Pakistani 104s who got mauled by the IAF's MiG 21s.caesarbc wrote:Add me to the list of detractors for the F-104 Starfighter. Out of all the 21st century planes, that is the only one that did not see any combat....well ok, an Indian F-104 shot down a Pakistani jet, but does that really count????
And I think one 104 even got shot down by an attack aircraft during a turning dogfight.
Yes, the 104s were used in Vietnam.....but they don't really have a good record there. Several were shot down, a couple was involved in a mid-air collision, and no air kills to show for it.
They were used as MiG-bait by pretending to be 105s, and NVAF did send up fighters to intercept....still no kills for the 104s.
Good bird, but it's built for one purpose, and one purpose alone. To intercept Russian bombers. Hence the short range and small payload.
104
I'm not even talking about the history, or lack thereof. After all, planes like the Hurricane have plenty of history but have yet to be made by any of the 3 companies, and I think this is no coincidence.I guess that is why I fail to see all the hoopla about it.
The 104 is, IMO, the most detailed and impressive 1:18 AC yet. If you do not have one or have not seen one assembled, in person, then you don't know what you are missing. By far the most 1:18 bang for your buck, whether it be $40 at WM, or $29 - $49 online.

IT served in Italy from 1965 till 2006, Greece 1966 till 2000, Japan 1966 till 2000. on & on it was the First plane that could do Super Cruise that they are blowing about on F-22, the Only plane to hold altitude and speed record at same time. the only fighter to stay in front line service longer in world is the F-4 Phantom. the F-104 was taken out of service in USAF because generals wanted fighters that carried nukes.
when we go to airshows the F-16, F-15, F-18 pilots know that our 50 year old fighter can still go faster then they can.

I disagree here, combat history is somewhat a plus, but looks mean a whole lot more for a model.GooglyDoogly wrote:Um...if it's a combat aircraft, then YES. Combat history is a plus.Moth wrote:Is combat history the only reason for making a model?

BTW, can the Mig-25 "super cruise"? if I remember right it should be able to, it can rip up to Mach 2.5

super cruise is being able to stay above mach 1 without using afterburner
a Mig 25 used 9 tons of fuel to fly 195 miles at mach 1.5. if you turn off burners it is 600 mph chunk of steel. most fighters need burners to get any where close to mach 1. only F-104, and F-22 can maintain high mach # without cans lite. F-22 does it with high output main engines. F-104 uses aerodynamics, light airframe and J-79 engine
