Panzer IV Modifications

Thanks to boardmember Gary1930, my S1 Panzer IV now has schurtzen I purchased a set from his ebay auction and when they arrived spent the whole afternoon painting and attaching them. I would highly encourage any boardmembers considering a set of schurtzen to get some! It beats paying the high price for a Europanzer

I designed my shurtzen to be removable so that the tank is left unharmed. The brackets were made using a staple-gun staple that had been trimmed to about 1/4 inch in height. I only made a couple of brackets for each side, as the schurtzen are all one piece. To attach the bracket, I drilled out tiny holes using a hand drill and glued in the bracket. I then painted the schurtzen using a mixture of Testors Acrylic US Army Gulf Tan lightened with flat white. The green color is a little off, but I will be rectifying that soon. Nonetheless, I thought it came out looking good and the addition of schurtzen greatly improve the look of the tank!

Those look just great, T-man. I'm impressed with your brackets. The latest batch I had cut include small plastic brackets that glue on the Schurtzen to hang them on the existing hooks - funtional, but not accurate like yours.

I'm also very pleased that you are happy with the quality. That comes from a $50,000 laser cutting machine that a friend of mine owns.

Gary said in his previous post that he is now providing skirts with glue-on brackets, but that those skirts he initially made (like mine) did not come with them. That's where the staples and hand drill came in handy

After seeing Tman's work I decided to take the plunge and order a set. I like Tmans idea for the mounts, I'll probably craft something similar, thanks for the idea T Below is the subject for my conversion, should be really nice if the paintjob comes out half as nice as tmans, I'll post some pics when she's finished...

Thanks to Gary1930 I have a set of the Schurzen coming my way and I'm very excited about this project, it should be a lot of fun to do and well worth the small investment, a big tip of the hat to Gary for stepping up and offering these to the members. For anyone who is considering a Schurzen project I would like to recommend the Squadron Signal publications booklet "Panzerkampfwagen IV In Action", these can usually be found used thru Amazon for about $5 to $10 depending on condition, and new for around $15 at Borders and the like. The booklet has many color plates of camo schemes for the Schurzen, plus a lot of excellent black and white photos of the tanks in the field, it would be a nice resource for anyone in painting or adding battle damage to the skirts.
