Spinach camo 109
Sorry if this has been posted before. What is the deal with the spanach 109 ? A seller on e-bay said that this was a promo with 21st back in the day . Is this correct ? I have seen them go for as low as $85 to well over $200. If this was the first promo and the Terror is the second I can't wait for the third. Hmm maybe a B-25 with the parrot head nose art packing those 6 big nasty 50 cals. Or is it 8 big nasty 50 cals?

Re: Spinach camo 109
I believe that is the Helmut Wick Bf-109E which was a part of the Jagdgeschwader 2 "Richthofen". Wick was Geschwader Kommodore....some of the guys that have been around 1/18 for a longer period can be more definitive as to the "promo" or special offering that this was via 21C.....all I know is that this airplane is VERYYYYYY elusive, and when it shows up, as you already pointed out, VERRRRRYYYYY costly.pickelhaube wrote:Sorry if this has been posted before. What is the deal with the spanach 109 ? Having seen one two weeks ago on eBay, I was proud to enter a final bid of $80, prepared to go "wayyyy up" to $100, if necessary-well this baby went for $305!!!!! Yeow, I do well, BUT I have to toe the line somewhere-gosh, hope meine Frau is "listening" to this post

As I recall, this paint scheme was available through direct contact with 21st Century Toys. I heard about its availability on the original Groundpounder's forum.
It wasn't so much a promo as an offering to their collector club(?). All it took was a phone call to 21st with your credit card to get it.
I distinctly remember talking on the phone to Arlene and saying, "Oh, what the heck; better send me two."
Now I'm glad I did. Maybe someday I'll sell the extra one and it'll offset the cost of the rest of the XD collection.
Or, at least, maybe the cost of five Flight 19 Avengers...
Cheers,
aae83
P.S. Changed my comment about "only" being available from 21st. Apparently, it was also available from some other outlets, as well. I don't think it was ever available through TRU, which was the mass outlet for XD at the time.

Spinach Camo 109
The Spinach Camo 109 was the first 1:18 aircraft in my collection...I got it for $39.95 at the D-Day Museum Store in New Orleans about 4 years ago...still one of my all time favorite 1:18 aircraft! JD

I got mine at a Hungates hobby store here in Richmond. This of course was a few years ago, now the store is closed.
I don't understand the popularity of this plane, other than the fact that there weren't too many made. IMO, the thing is hideous....... maybe the ugliest paint scheme 21C has produced thus far. Aside from low production numbers and historical significance, I don't get it.

Alright, here we go. The Spinach 109 was the Series 2 aircraft. It came right after "White 12" in 2001. While "White 12" was a TRU aircraft, the Spinach 109 was only carried by on-line stores and a few brick and mortar stores. It's scheme (check out the profile album) isn't too accurate, but due to the relative rarity of the plane, it's a collector's gold nugget along with the S-2 Ambush Panther, that was released in the same method. I sold mine off a lone time ago due to lack of interest, hehehehe.... I really prefer Galland's 109 over all others.

I remember getting mine through 21st's member club and at the time I thought it was a cool looking plane. I had numerous intentions to sell it, but never got around to it and now I'm sort of glad that I didn't since it is one of the rarer planes in 21st's collection and does command a hefty price when it does go on the market.

Thanks for the info guys. The spinach camo was the FIRST XD plane or tank for that matter that I ever got. I baught it from a hobby shop in my area for $45. At the time I thought it was a little pricy. A couple of months later the hobby shop was going out of business so they had everything on sale. I got another spinach a snake Stuka and a first issue Corsair for $30 each. I thought what a deal at least I did not have to pay $45 each. This happend about 2 years ago or so. I went home with my arms full of planes and thought let me check to see if these XD toys are on e-bay. Well they were ! And how. That is how I started collecting. It pretty much is an addiction now.

Yeah you guys pretty much have it right! It was the S2 scheme built to be a fan club / 21c exclusive. It did fairly well sales wise and then the remainder of the stock was sent to various specialty shops and museum gift stores. It was a short run of about 2000 or 3000 planes. Something like that. The planes were "limited" and they are pretty old so that combo makes them prime real estate in today's market.
Glad I got mine back in the day! I think it was my 4th or 5th plane If I remember! I think my wife misses those days where my xd airplane collection could be counted on one hand!

I don't know all the figures and my security clearance doesn't allow me the right to see the exact numbers. But I have heard of some items that were hotter than others... Sometimes its more about the paint and not as much about the model.
1. USAF F-104 Starfighter Paint scheme did really well
2. Blonde Angel P-47 razorback was very popular
3. PudgyV is pretty much sold out
4. People really like the Huff F-86
5. 1:18 figs do well
6. Pak-40 seems popular
7. California Cutie P-38 is getting GREAT reviews and feedback
those are some of the more recent that I have heard talked about in passing as being good prodcuts with legs. I am sure there are others though.

It is sad, but I think the Avengers may have been a bit of a bust considering all the work that went into them. Wal Mart didn't help things by purchasing so many and then discounting them; then there are the various QC issues (missing screw covers, broken parts, etc. that seem to abound with this plane more than others) It is still one of my favorite 21c planes, however!
Now we need a "not so hot" list

"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

In the New Orleans area only one pak 4o showed up in 8 stores. There were 20 Avengers at one store (now discounted to $30) and none in the others. You would think that they would spread them out.
Other than the Spinach and the Terror I think that the P-38's Samantha and the Haleanka are the top money takers.
As far as the armor goes the ambush camo Panther is the most sought after. It used to be the camo Tiger but they have been re-issued driving the price down. The green camo Panthers were more sought after than the ambush but that has flip floped.
