1/48 P-40 WM defect!

Post by warhawker » Fri Jan 19, 2007 12:57 pm

Get this story!! I found this exact 1/48 schema P-40 plane today at lunch at a WM.
viewtopic.php?t=6605
They had about 4 of them on the shelf so picked one up and added it to the other items I have with me to buy. I usually use the self check out line but they were all used so a WM worker told me that he could check me out at another counter. He finishes checking my items and the last item was the P-40. He tells me that he can not sell me this item since there was no SKU # and that it is reported as 'defective' from the manufacturer and that they were in the process pulling the item. I asked him why and he stated that he just had to do it and could not sell it to me. I pointed out that there were others on the shelf and why did they not just pull them if that was the case. A look of dumb-found/confusion came over his face! He said they are in the process of correcting this and will be putting them back on the shelf once the 'new ones' came in?!?! I assured him that it 'appeared' that this P-40 as well as the rest looked fine. I asked him if this would be the same case if I pulled another P-40 from the shelf. He said it would.
I did not have time to talk to a manager or argue this case since I was out of time. I think I will go back after work and try the self checkout line.

Sounds more like a case of too damn lazy to manually enter it or confirm the price.

I highly doubt that anyone at a checkout lane would know whether or not an item is "defective", at least not before a department team pulled it from the shelf. If an item is truly defective and requires that it be pulled from the shelves, this happens immediately. And if it is for any reason safety related (lead paint, choking hazard, etc.) there is always--by law--a recall notice posted in the customer service area.

I had a similar problem with the SKU# on a Bf-109K4.. It wasn't entered into the system yet, even though they were sitting on the shelf!!! The cashier had to call back to the Toy dept and get the SKU# from the Dept Manager whom also informed me that they shouldn't have been sold yet, but they would sell me one because they had been put out on the shelf.. When I went back the next day, they were all gone and weren't restocked until Christmas time..

It happened to me- find a person competent enough to have one of the scan guns and management clearance and they can input the stock number and turn around and go check out at the cashiers and be done with it. I guess they have instore wi fi... It worked for me- she did have to ask me the price to input it though.

I have had the same thing happen - and the cashier asked me how much it was and hit a few buttons and added the price on the register. No problem.

I had that happen when I found the 1:48 P-51C and Me-109K  The cashier wouldn't sell them to me as the planes hadn't been entered into the system - and the person who could enter them wasn't there. The cashier told me to come back in a couple days. Four days later I went back - and the planes still hadn't been entered into the system! That time, however, someone was there with the authority to enter the planes and after a slow checkout, I walked out with them.

To me instances like those above are yet another example of shoddy business practice by Wal Mart. If they can't keep track of a few toys, what else are they missing? When a store stocks something, it should be immediately put into the system or else not go out on the shelf. At the time I was glad it was only the 1:48 planes - which I could live with not getting - and not some cool and highly desired 1:18 piece like and Avenger or F-86.

I scanned a P-51C I found on the clearance aisle and it wouldn't bring up a price. I just put it back, but it sounds like I ran into the same problem you guys were having.
