Pionerpanzerwagen question

In the bag of pieces attached to the bottom of the display base there were two parts that look like they should attach to the vehicle.

One is a khaki colored tube (mortar?). It looks like it could slide onto the side of the vehicle under the bridge rack, but the hole in the rack support isn't large enough.

The second piece is a squarish thing that seems to slide into the forward gun. I have no clue about this part.

Do either of these parts attach, or are they just extra kibble like the partial TOW launchers in the Humvees?

Could the "squarish" thingee be a case of ammo for the 2.8 anti tank gun?

I am also interested in what those things are, I think the tube might be the ammo case, I have no idea what the square thing is, I think it's too small for ammo.

Since mine is sitting here on my filing cabinet at work, I decided to take a look. The round thing almost looks like it could be a map case.
The squarish thing I don't know, either. Looks too small to be accurately sized ammo, but that's what it looks like.

The tube, which mounts on the outside of the vehicle, is the container for the cleaning rods for the top side gun. If you have a Panther, you will notice a similar tube on the side which is also used to carry the cleaning rod and associated items. 21st left the handy mounting loops on the passenger side of the body, but you will have to enlarge the hole in the bridge carrier bracket to get it to fit.

The squarish thing, with the indented "X" and the 12 silver dots is the ammo holder for the topside gun. Since the gun, a 28mm I think, is a manual breech loaded weapon, the shells were kept handy for quick ammo handling. It does slide onto the gun, but I tossed the directions before I noticed the extra parts, so I am not sure exactly how.

Both responses are my best guess, as I am too lazy today to look up the exact nomenclature.

I asked this exact question when i bought my PPW. The tube is a cleaning rod for the gun and the square thing with the silver is i think a ammunition box. I didn't get instructions either with my PPw.

That may be why I dont have them. It seems like I have everything else in my filing cabinet. I never looked in the box to see if there were any...

The shells for the 2.8cm anti-tank gun were small. Remember, this gun was developed in the '30's and was outdated very early in the war. Just used for some "punch" against infantry and soft skinn vehicles or lightly armored vehicles.

And the gun was breech loading, one shell at a time. Gunner fired using two spade grips, set off to the right of the breech block. The gun is made in 1/6 by DID and DML. I have them both and they are just neat guns. I'll post pics of them with the shells (one shell came with each version) if anyone is interested. On my "to do" list is mounting one of these guns on my SDkfz 250. Got the mount, from one of out custom wizards (also on this board), just need to find the time. That's not easy.

The sPzB41 2.8cm anti-tank gun was mounted on the Spkfz 250/11 half-track as well as the Spkfz 251 half-track in various models besides the assault bridge sections on the engineer track made by 21C.

The gun was primarily used on two different wheeled mounts. Two versions with different sized wheels. One, with larger (trailer) sized wheels was towed behing anything light, like a Kettengrad or the Sdkfz 250. The second version had little "baby" wheels and was used by paratroop units. The small wheel version was also used mounted on the Sdkfz 250 with the gun mounted and the wheel mount carried on the back of the half-track in case they wanted to dismount the gun.

Was this the same gun as the 28mm "squeeze "gun? I recall a 28 mm gun that had a tapered bore that reduced to 20 mm at the muzzle. It fired a tungsten(sp)steel round and developed a unusually high muzzle velocity...

Those tricky Germans came up with some neat ways to kill people.

Oh, and I found the pic I was looking for before.

A nice project, if I ever find the time and get a chance to install "Gary1930"'s nice mount, BTW, the wheel contraption on the back is the small wheeled gun mount.

Ahh, the squeeze gun. I think the Brits first encountered them in North Africa. The complete round was about the size of a 2 D cell flash light. I recall the Airfix 1:72 German Infantry sets having one included. They were mounted on a skid/tripod kind of arrangement...
