Cool.
You should make them for resale.
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Let me hear your guns!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: My what?
Colonel "Madman" Maddox: Your guns! Ack, ack, ack, ack, ack!
Captain Wild Bill Kelso: [fires his airplane's guns] AHHHH!

Is that originally the Joe Thunderwing (or whatever it was called)?

You`ve done an incredible job reworking that into a JSF.

I too think you should make a few for resale.

Should be the Lightning 3 - since you damn yankees seem to have missed out the English Electric bird from the 1950's... :(

Hmm, someone correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't that Lightning the first bird to go supersonic in level flight without afterburner? Or was it the first to sustain supersonic off 'burner? One or the other, I'm sure. And still prettier than either American bird, too!

Besides, what are you worried about? At least you haven't got MoD changing the name of the Bureaufighter, so sorry Eurofighter and insulting one of your finest WWII aircraft... oh. I see your point

I wonder If the MoD will change the name on it when the RAF get them, plus one of the bases I last heard were short listed to base the JSF was RAF Leeming. Now that`ll make it easier for me to see if they ARE.

Jeffrowse,
Yea the Bureafighter is more befitting that HUGE Waste of Money. Though calling it the "Typhoon" is indeed a Great Insult. Could have been worse they may have said "Spitfire" or "Hurricane" as the new name :(

Alas the MoD have been TOLD to go this way with this flying crate yet for the Heckler Kock G36 Ohhh no they couldn`t do that now could they, instead still got that bloody dread awfull L85 A2 in service. Even though HK have tried there best to tweek it when modding it for the A2 version.

It`s such ashame when the MoD is more Politically inclined rather than practicle FOR the Military.

Actually One of the reasons they named it lighting 2 has to due not only because of the P-38 but also because of the English Electric Lighting.

Lightning 4 you are forgetting the Ar 234 Blitz (ligtning).

As Wolf has said above, that was my understanding that the choosing of the name was to pay homage to both of these aircraft.

Do not forget that besides the US and UK the F35 is destined to serve for the armed forces of Italy, Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Denmark, Norway and last but not least Australia in the RAAF.

As for the Typhoon I quite liked the adoption of that name as it also gave reference to Willy's ground breaking Taifun (althoug this was not in any way a fighter).

Can you you imagine the screams when a Mustang II is anounced.

But I'm an Australian, and we only know how to play cricket

i find many of the names of post war aircraft are poorly chosen. The worst part is that, apparently, a great deal of thought goes into the selection of the names!

Fighting Falcon....blech. Falcon would have been fine, drop the 'Fighting'

Raptor.....like oh my god, how trendy was that

Lightning II....just discussed

Spirit.....yawn...but better than any of the above

Nighthawk......yawn again.

Corsair II.....there are tons of good names, why re-use them?

Thunderbolt II...what did this have to do with the first thunderbolt? Both fine planes but should not share the same name. Warthog should be official......no guts.

However, there have been some dandy names too:

Blackbird....just right, not too overly dramatic

Eagle....just right again

Tomcat......different, catchy and not stuffy sounding

Lancer......looks like one too

Spectre.....death from above in the dark, would have been a good name for the B-2, if it hadn't already been taken

As far as i'm concerned there should never, ever be a plane named 'something II'. No need to re-use names. Think. Don't give me that paying tribute crap.

And there better never, ever, ever be a Spitfire II or Mustang II.

Yeah. And we don't need a Mustang II to remind us of that Pinto based wannabe pony car either...

As far as I am concerned, there have been two great Mustangs--one saw service in the 40's and 50's, the other from 1964 to about 1972... Although to be fair: I have to admit, the new ones are getting back to the original spirit...

Aferguson

Remember that these names and re-manes are aim at the general public and not the enthusiast so there is an attempt to conger up some link with the past or like with the Spirit and Raptor ride a popular sentiment.

Crew names are usually better that official name as these names usually reflect the crews impressions of the aircraft like:

Do335 official name Pfeil (Arrow), unofficial name Ameisenbär (Anteater) simply because it looked like one.
Me262 official name Schwalbe (Swallow), unofficial name Sturmvogel (Storm Bird) far more appropriate.
B52 offical name Stratofortress, unofficial name BUFF or Big Ugly Flying Fu…….r

I also prefer the word play of official designations like the way B1 becomes Bone.

However there are some names that are fitting.

Fi156 Storch (Stork) with that storky appearance what else could have been)
Me163 Komet (Comet) sure does go and look like one.
He219 Uhu (Owl) after all it was a night hunter.
Ar234 Blitz (Lightning)
Me323 Gigant (Giant) a simple no brainer
Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest – just a great continuation on a theme
Mustang
Thunderbolt
Etc…..

Looks like they were for the most part far better at naming planes in the 30’s, 40’s and maybe even the 50’s, but they did not have the legacy of marketing department or expensive consultant back then just a gut feeling.

Sturmvogel was the name of the fighter-bomber variant of the 262, named by Hitler himself. (it was also his dumb idea to hang heavy bombs on a jet fighter).

But i agree with what you say.....crew names are often superior and less 'pretencious' than official names.

But i wonder how important the names are to the image of a plane, especially down through history. Imagine if the Spitfire had been named the Robin or the Woodpecker. Would it's image be the same? Does it matter, or is it asthetics and abilities alone that matter, with the name being pretty much irrelevant..?

Re Sturmvogel, yes I had my doubts on that one as I was typing, but give me a break, as I’m at work and typing of the cuff, anyway I knew that if I was wrong that someone would soon correct me. And it did not take long.

As far as the bad idea goes well maybe yes when considering the desperate situation Germany was in at the time, but would you say the same about slinging bombs under Spitfires, Mustangs, Fw190s etc... I would prefer to say not such a dumb idea just poor timing.

As for what's in a name well I'm not sure that the P51 Teddy Bear or the Supermarine Potato would have retained these names for to long once their combat abilities had been proven, but then again the Bf109 did just fine without a catchy name, although was the 109s semi- official name the Adler (Eagle) and if so is the F15 then an Eagle II

I always thought "Wobblin' Goblin" was a much more accurate name for the F117 than "Shi... " sorry, Nighthawk...

Spud: no breaks for you..

I think what made putting bombs on the 262 such a poor idea was that handfuls of sturmvogels dropping a couple of 500 pound bombs each on advancing allied columns (if they got through the overwhelming allied air superiority now that there only advantage, speed, was lost) was hardly going to help the war effort. But those same 262's attacking allied bombers streams, perhaps decimating them and thereby taking the pressure off of the oil refineries, so more fuel could be available for the luftwaffe and army would have made a far bigger contribution to germany's war effort.

That said, i'm quite looking forward to a Sturmvogel version of the 262...i think it looks quite spiff. :)

We have Texan II's fly over all the time on final for AFW.

We also occasioally get a low pass by a Temco Pinto.

I'd love to get a pic of a pass over the nose of my Temco Swift. That would be sweet!
