panther side skirts

Post by shorty » Mon Jan 10, 2005 5:14 pm

has anyone built side skirts for their panthers? i'm wondering if anyone has scratch-built the proper clips to hang the skirts?

Boardmember Cetone said he was attempting to build side skirts for the Panzer IV, and was even going to sell some. I don't know whether or not that project is still on... The post is further down this page, but here's the link anyways:

We have also heard from board moderator aferguson (who had another conversation with 21st modeler, Roy Sutherland) that 21st will have at least a couple more repaints of the Panzer IV and will include side skirts.

side skirts

Post by red69charger » Mon Jan 10, 2005 8:07 pm

I had made some resin schurzen for the Panther a few years ago and sold a few to people on this website. I'll dig around and see if They did not include hangers and were simply glued to the side. Unfortunately I do not have the mold any longer. There's a single photo including them in one of my webshots folders hanging on my custom Jagdpanther:

I don't know anybody else who is currently making them.

if it's not too much trouble than sure. i was just wondering if anyone found a way to hook on the skirts llike on the real tank instead of just glueing it directly onto the hull. from reference photos it looks like there were 6 hooks to clamp the skirts on.

i also noticed that the spare track holders should be angled with the hull instead of being 90° face up

from reference pictures i see the panthers have 6 clips for hooking the skirts on. my question is do the skirts overlap each other on the hooks?

has anyone built a tamiya model that might be able to shed light into this question of mine?

the panzer iv skirts should be easier to hook on since the brackets and hooks are already there already?

Schurzen

Post by red69charger » Tue Jan 11, 2005 7:29 pm

Shorty, check the above link again in an hour or so as I uploaded an image I had of the original Panther schurzen I used. Its straight from the side but its the only other photo I could find. The in action Panther photos and images I have in my library show anywhere from a straight 90 degree drop to about -5 deg. inward to about +5 deg outward. As I see it, it would be OK to simply glue them in place if you don't want to go the bracket route.

If you want a slight angle and are doing simple glue, I might recommend GOOP general household glue to help get the job done. Its kind of like a more sturdy rubber cement. It takes about 4 hours to dry completely but its wonderful stuff. If you screw up it also comes off pretty clean with a little rubbing.

I skipped the bracket route because they seemed to be asking for a little bit of trouble from something that is largely unseen when viewing the model but if you are a stickler for detail you might try thin brass bars that you could bend into shape. From what I can tell the plates do not really overlap but fit snuggly next to one another. That said, I don't really have any closeup photos of the schurzen to tell all that well but I don't see any that appear to be hanging over onto each other like they do in some of the Mk IV photos. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Glad to hear you haven't completely abandoned the Mk IV schurzen idea. Remember that all of us who buy the first issue still won't have any for them. I'm still up for buying a couple sets from you if you do manage to get a production version of them.

red69charger, i think i can see why you abandoned the hooks for the skirts, it is too much trouble. i had plan to use the spare track holders on the panther as brackets for the skirts and cut up floppy disks as skirts but i think i'm just going to glue it straight on and put some bumps on the skirts to sorta indicate the bracket

CENTONE-

In your pictures I saw you have made a canvas top for your U.S. Halftrack... can you fill us in a little on how you did that and what you used for it.

I think he used a T-shirt if I remember correctly. Got a chance to see that one in person and it's sweet :P
