Custom Korean Corsair F4U-4, New Pics!
Just finished my converting my 21st Corsair from the F4U-1 to my personal favorite, the four-bladed F4U-4. I'll post more pics later when I get a chance, but here's a sneak peek for now. Enjoy!

I built the prop from two Corsair props. I cut two blades off of on of the props but made sure not to damage the hub. I then cut another blade off of the second prop. I then drilled a hole in the base of each blade and inserted a small section of wire. I drilled corresponding holes in the hub. I glued it all together with super glue and then built up the missing areas of the hub with tamiya putty.

I built the chin scoop out of a 1/48 scale F-106 weapons bay door. I test fitted it, sanded it down to fit and then used Tamiya putty to get it look right based on reference photos.

I got rid of the extra bracing on the canopy by sanding down the two braces on the top. I masked off the clear area around it with tape and then sanded starting with very coarse and working my way to and ultra fine polishing stick. A dip in Future acrylic floor polish got rid of most of the scratches, but there are still some deep marks from some over-zealous sanding.

Very nice job, it looks like it's from the factory.
Did Korea-time Corsairs have stronger engines?
An extra blade needs some extra horses!

Thanks for the compliments, everybody. I'll get some better photos up tomorrow.
As for the markings, only the snakes on the nose are decals. They are scanned images from 1/48 decals that I enlarged. The rest of the markings are all painted on.
I was originally going to do decals for all of the markings, but ran into major problems when I used white decal paper and it turned out to be too translucent and alot of the lettering decided to curl up on itself while I was trying to apply it. This lead to lots of cursing
.
The only solution was to mask off the area, use the decal as a pattern, then cut out the image in the masking tape. I then spray painted the image. I didn't use an airbrush, just spray cans. My airbrush is crappy to say the least. This process took awhile, but it worked.
As for the F4U-4, the engine was more powerful than the -1 variants, thus necessitating the four blade prop and the carb inlets were moved from the wing roots to the new for the -4 scoop under the chin. This power boost netted the -4 an extra 30 mph over earlier models.

I know I'm very late here, but sweet job on the Corsair! The beauty of it is the fact that early -4's had the F4U-1 windshield, which works for your model. Wow, now I really wish somebody would release the F4U-4 with the cool cowl.....
Thanks for sharing!! Well done mate!
