Vietnam 1/18 figures wish list!

Post by 75th Ranger » Wed Dec 29, 2004 12:26 pm

Hello everyone and Happy holidays!
I was wondering if you guys would like to participate in a little survey that i'm doing. Since I plan on using the information results to send a letter to the toy companys in regards to the desire of new 1/18 Nam figures.

based on the idea that 21st is creating a "Platoon" figure set, I came up with the idea of a possible new set for the Nam series based on the TV series "Tour of Duty".
the figure set would include the main ccharacters of the series like:

1- Lt. Goldman
2- SSG. Anderson
3- PFC. Ruiz
4- SPC. Taylor
5- SPC. Horn
6- CPL. Johnson
7- SPC. Percell
8- PFC. Baker
9- and the medic "DOC"

please participate in the poll and tell me what you think about the idea.
Also include your info in a post so that it can be used a back up references to the toy company.
this is just an idea that i have and it may not work but it is worth trying!
HOOAH!

I don't think I've ever seen the "Tour of Duty" show, but I'll vote to get any more 1:18 'Nam figures, vehicles, and accessories out there!

I too have never watched Tour of Duty but I voted yes. I just want more Nam stuff. I am going to be painting the M113 and changing it to the Nam era version w/o the extra armor on top.

It was a great show. I have the Season 1 DVD. Best Buy had it. I didn't know Season 2 was out yet.

I'd go for the figures if they were a bit more Historically Accurate as Oppossed to TV accurate. There were episodes where guys were wearing Woodland Camo Helmet Covers and some of the Huey's were later models with the Twin Turbines.

But other than that, I'd be all for it.

i agree to keep it real

Post by 75th Ranger » Wed Dec 29, 2004 4:37 pm

Keeping it realistic is a key factor...but the idea of the figures based in the tv show seems pretty cool and exicting to me....just as a concept.

by the way, the second dvd set came out yesterday!
check out amazon.com for it!
I already ordered mine.

Weapon sets!

Post by ParatrooperCarbine » Wed Dec 29, 2004 9:10 pm

Weapon + accessory sets!!!! Like the BBI 1:18 ones.

I want to see one with:

AK-47 (they already make one)
SKS
RPG (they already make one)
M-16 (they already make one)
M-16 A1 ? (they already make one)
M-79 (they already make one)
Helmet (they already make one)
Boonie hat (they already make one)
M-1 Carbine-these were used on a limited basis in Vietnam (they already make one with the paras)
One each of canteen and other belt packs to replace those lost in the vacuum cleaner.
.45 pistol?

Hey, that is enough for two different packs. Hey guys at 21C, this will sell!!!!

By the way, why is there no Eastern Warrior with an AK, since 21c makes one already (with NVA) and the AK is as common as sand in both Iraq AND Afghanistan?????

I watched Tour of Duty. I liked the show and the music but I could never get over the idea that Southern California woods with a couple of plastic "jungle" plants could pass for VN. I could accept the mistakes in equipment and helos as "Hollywood" but the fact that these guys never had the "drenched in sweat" look of being in the boonies. Even when they had towels and sweat marks on the fatiques I had the feeling these actors were not in 95+ degree heat with 100% humidity.

Sorry, as I said I liked the show but could never accept it as "real". Same as "Combat" and "Galant Men". I watched every show, but realistic? No.

My experience tells me "Platoon", was more realistic than ToD ever was.
Just the scenes with the guys mixing oil in with waste and burning it. The smell of s_ _ t burning with oil stays with you a long time. The drug dens also brought back memories. I personally was with the beer and Johnny Walker guys, but they were there. "Platoon" brings back memories, ToD does not.

I'll buy the "Platoon" figures....ToD, no.

I completellyunderstand your feelings but

Post by 75th Ranger » Thu Dec 30, 2004 6:34 am

My idea was the concept of creating a new set of figures...
I think that all shows and movies that were prior to "Platoon" didn't really presesnted the realities of war in Nam or maybe the FX were not good enough to look as real as they started looking form "Platoon" on...
The idea of the show is what i like the most, you could inmerse in the character story..even though all the FX and props were not as accurate.
Another example of a figure set idea could be the figures from "FULL METAL JACKET"
for example:

1- Pfc. Joker
2- Pfc. Cowboy
3- EightBall
4- M-60 gunner
5- Drill Seargent Ermy

and maybe a female VC, just like in the movies.
What do you guys think of this idea?
All i really want is more Nam figure sets 1/18 based on an idea concept.
take care,
HOOAH!

A set based on Nam Era Marines would not be bad at all. I'd prefer later in the war though, the M14 as a rifle is a bit boring to me...Give me the Mattel Plastic Black Rifle.

Add to the Accessory sets an XM-177 (Car-15), M-60, RPD for sure.

These days our best bet is a Video Game tie in (although, ToD would be a good concept with Characters, backgrounds etc). The problem is one of the games out now selling itself as Nam has the Woodland Camo Helmet cover issue (all they had to do was look at a book to solve that one).

In this concept would we get different versions of the same character? Like the time Danny, Ruiz and Taylor went to Hawaii would we get R&R versions? I'd go for that. Or like a Saigon Base Camp area where they have OG-106 caps on and no field gear.

I'd even take some of the characters off of China Beach...

I can't recall, but what exactly was their unit designation in ToD?

We have a chance at getting a 1/18 MAC V SOG guy out of Dusty Trials next year and as much as I like the super secret agent orange stuff, I prefer grunts when it comes to "Army" building.

Vietnam era Marines would be cool, I think Full Metal Jacket would be a great line and 21st century already made the U.S.M.C. M48 Tank. The battle for Hue City would be a easy diorama with the help of Build a Rama. Animal Mother is the M60 gunner in Full Metal Jacket and don't forget Doc-J and Rafter-Man(Joker's sidekick). I guess that I've seen this movie a few too many times. That is my two cents worth.

it would be great if we were to get a set of 1/18 Nam figures based on either "Tour of Duty" or "Full Metal Jacket"...i don't mind minor differences and details...as long as i get the main figures!
HOOAH!

We're getting Platoon, isn't that good enough? I don't see why they would do another movie or TV show from the same era.

No it is not enough!

Post by 75th Ranger » Thu Dec 30, 2004 10:22 am

Just like one plane is not enough....one set of figures is not always enough for a collector...
CHOICE is what makes us enjoy the collecting hobby!
if you don't want more figures just don't post!
just like i don't say anything when they come up with the 3 or 4th repaint of the same plane.
Ok!
take care,

Hey more figures... no problem... more tanks... no problem... more planes... no problem!

I will take whatever we can get. Just the news that there are more choices on the horizon is enough to make me happy. 2005 sounds like it could be the best year ever!

Platoon figs sound really cool. I am really excited to see what the sculpts are going to look like!

Funny that this poll came up as I just bought Full Metal Jacket. If there were figures from that movie I'd buy them in a heart beat. I can see it know, a Parris Island diorama with R. Lee Ermy screaming at Pvt Pyle, all in 1/18. Oh I can only wish. I think Marines are a must for the Vietnam line, I mena the M-48 is labeled USMC is it not? I'd also get some figures from Platoon, We Were Soldiers, and Tour of Duty.
