For anyone familiar with the prototype: What are the sets of four pointed objects on the front 'fenders', surrounded by a cage? They look like some sort of flare or rocket - I can't find any reference to them in a search. If weapons, are they offensive, or defensive? Why are they set at an angle? Are they on all M113's, or is this a specific modification?
I have found photos of vehicles that have the 'cages', but nothing inside of them.

I thought they were smoke dischargers. Anyone?

As unlikely as it sounds, they work. I saw a live fire demostration of the M1 Abrams and they let go with the smoke dischargers and the smoke went up about fifty feet and spread out completely obscuring the M1.
If I hadn't seen the tank on the firing line you would not know it was there.
My personal experience with a smoke discharger in VN, involved a cigar, and it didn't work so hot. Everybody could still see me.
