tman, you bet..

For those of you that don't understand how this all works, here is a very brief list of items that are required to have a forum like this.

1. Domain name (ie warbird-photos.com)
2. Server (the hardware, network, etc..)
3. Forum software (phpbb, what Aferg is the moderator of but not the admin of)

The first item, domain name, is what broke today.

In very simplistic terms, no active member here has any administrative or financial control or access to _any_ of these critical items.

So when there are problems....

The key is to have more than one person with full control over each one. The items I listed could all be set up to have at least three people in charge at a minimum so if one or two were gone, all is still well.

We are surviving on the goodwill of others; don't get me wrong, I really appreciate it, and I'd be surprised if Britt would be anything other than supportive of an effort on our behalf to become self sufficient.

I think we could do a lot better than just having a forum. If we purchase a decent web package, I would see a forum being just one aspect of the overall website. :D

P-51 wanted to share Admin powers with me but could not. This site only allows one admin.

If we are talking about moving, we would need Britt in order to save all the data from all the boards and move them. He is the only one that can do that.

An alternative idea is to set up a second site and just have everyone move there and start from scratch.

A council is a good idea in many ways and i like some of the reasons Grunt put forward but with councils can come disagreement and with disagreement can come big problems.

I think it's better to have one head honcho, with the others being subords (ie moderators). Having more than one person with access to the admin powers is a good idea in some ways though, to prevent occurences such as today's. But you'd need people you could trust however, as one person could run amuck on their own and two people with admin powers could start squabbling etc.....don't say it couldn't happen, i've seen situations like that in life plenty of times. Everything would unravel. Keeping ultimate power in one person's hands would prevent this....so it's a mixed blessing whichever way it is set up.

But sharing admin powers is not possible here.

So moving has some pros and cons but i hate to do anything without Britt being in the loop first....
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Well, I'm not ready to jump ship just yet. I'm thinking that it was just an oversite of a very busy P51 to let payment lapse. As soon as we here back from him we will have a better idea of how we are here.

Hi Everyone,

I agree we need to talk to Britt first before any decision is made regarding the forum or moving it.

I mentioned in the other forum that I believe this board is part of the Planes of Fame website. Therefore, I think the Planes of Fame museum is probably the organization that pays for the domain names that keep this site running. Britt may not even run that or have anything to do with that aspect of this forum, that may be someone at Planes of Fame making that call and paying the bills. Perhaps they were the ones that got behind.

In terms of a council, I feel that is a good idea, and no offense, but I would want to be on it. We need good characters to be moderators. I'm not saying Ferg and Teamski aren't, but I think there are some people on here given their prior histories would not be good on the council. Someone mentioned another fourm in the other thread, and I feel after reading the comments on that particular forum that the moderators did not do their job, and that is why their forum is being shut down. So we need moderators who possibly do not know everything about the hobby, so they have a very objective view to the posts. Let's face it, TKO, as nice of a person as he is and I like him, would not be a good moderator because of his close ties with 21st Century Toys.

I was emailing with another board member too and we were also saying that as sad as it is, we seemed to think the forum was losing its usefulness a little bit. As I mentioned in another thread, there is just too much nonsense going on right now on this forum with these posts and what people say in them. I support a good forum, but I won't support one that I am afraid to go on in my classroom because of the nonsense being discussed on it

I'd have to strongly oppose your offer , Coreyeagle. Sure there are lots of good people on the forum, evidenced by the fact that other people say that about them. But I have noticed that you do have a habit of telling everybody here what a great and clever guy you are. I'm not saying you are'nt, it's just painful listening to it.
A person qualified to do the job would not come on here and make all the assumptions and accusations that you have done today, without first being in possesion of all the facts.

Well Great to see SSHQ is back Up :D

As for the board, well an active Donation box & having it that Mods can renew & then we the members can help pay & mods keep track so we don`t have this issue in the future?

Failing that the Council idea & possible move to a new home with Member assistance is a Valid one.

I`ll help in anyway possible guys :D
