that's strange because the torpedo launch tubes on a PT boat are about 22 feet long yet the torpedos that went in them are only about 15 feet in length??

Still, i like what i'm hearing cos i can use one of the torpedos from the (several) Avengers i will eventuallly get on my Dumas 1/20 PT boat.

From what I read, the early PT boat torpedoes were Mark VIIIs, in tubes. Later, they used Mark XIIIs, on racks. The Mark 8s may have been larger; I don't know.

ah, that explains a lot. Hmm......maybe i'll graft two topredos together then, to get the proper length of the Mk VIII (21.4 feet).

I announced that the Avengers had hit two Walmarts and within 3 days of each announcement, they are gone!!!!! I know one other member from Tulsa, so there has to be more "lurking".....

It's all good to go now...it looks great! It's fully restored, with the exception of the topedo bay doors that are missing (the museum is looking for some). The irony is that the museum sought an Avenger, got one, subsequently ran a serial number check and found out that it actually served on the Hornet. Amazing!

At the beginning of PT Boat tactics the tubes were longer than the torpedos as they felt the torpedo needed that extra length to lauch straight and true. As the war progressed, and torpedos improved they found a tube was unnecessary altogether. The torpedos were started and rolled from the rack into the water.

In the final year, in the Pacific, torpedos were not used at all and the PT's became gun boats.

They started the war with one 20mm in t he rear and two twin .50 cal's and by the final year, they routinely carried a 40mm in the rear, a quick firing 37mm /or 30mm guns on the foredeck, the two .50 cal mounts and a handfull of 20mm and single .50 cal guns on the sides and 81mm mortars in the center. That was standard, individual skipers used any additional guns of all types that they could get their hands on. I have pics with the PT's looking like they were in the "Chinese Navy".

PT's were another of my favorite interests. We had one in Queens near LGA airport that the owner had turned into a pleasure yacht, it was docked near the highway, and I'd go crazy everytime we passed.....the mind boggles.

After work I'm going to try the Hudson NH store and see if the SKU is in there system. The stores around here are just getting the S2 BoB figs. I have to say there pretty sweet. I guess I maybe the NE guy for info. I hope i get good results.

I asked one WM in NH and one in MA and they both say its not in there system. is 063874810181 the correct SKU#?? come on you guys help a NE out. is there an Item # PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

It doesn't seem to matter how much info you give the idiots at wal-mart. We went through this when 21st put out the 1:6 Kett with trailer. Stores that had it didn't even show it in their system.

Found 8 Avengers in the Newton NJ Walmart. If you guys from the NYC area want to drive about 50-70 minutes, depending on traffic of course, they are there.

Will the searching is over, I finally located one of the TBF-1 Avenger from the Walmart store located in Forest City NC. Also found the classic aircraft series in 1/144 scale Ki-64 Hayate, Me-262A, P-51D Mustang and F6F-3/5 Hellcat. This is a great addition to my collection. Of course I have to take the wife to dinner at a fancey restaurant, and buy her more
knitting needles and yarn.
