What was the artwork on the box of the 21st Haleakala P-38?

In other words, how did you know that was the plane in the box? Did it have one of the little picture windows like the Putt Putt? Was the pilot visible in one of the little squares? I have seen a picture of the plane out of the box on ebay but not the box.

Same question for the "Louise" released by QVC.

No. The D-day was 1st series and the box did not have the "Historical Paint scheme" (or similar language) little box above the pilot so you knew that was S1. The original Putt Putt and SP had that little box, so that was the occassion when the contents were a mystery. The Haleakala too had that little box, but it was not at TRU so you knew what you were getting when you ordered online. Shark too was online only (and QVC). Finally the second run of Putt Putt had the new box with window.
So it was really only the SP & first Putt Putt that required opening to know the contents, and that is why back in the day you could go to TRU and they would have 20 P-38s all torn open (as most people were looking for the Putt Putt and not the made up SP scheme).

Wasn't the pilot also different between the P-38s? I seem to remember a Corsair Pilot replacing the P-38 pilot when the variations came out.

that was when TRU were worth going into i collect 1/18 and 1/6 back then they had shelves full of both

When I bought my D-Day p-38 at TRU, they had the D-Day and the SP and from what I remember the boxes were the same. I do remember having to open the boxes to find a D-Day version, as most of the ones they had were the SPs. I wish I would have bought both. Oh well.

OK, let's go with a 'trust me on this' - the below box represents what everything after the D-day (s1) and before the second run of Putt Putts came in.



The overall box art is the same as S1, but you'll notice a small yellow graphic "historic battle colors" or whatever. If you were not aware of this distinction and you were at TRU then you would have needed to open the box to see if you were getting D-day or later. Even if you were aware you would have had to open to see if you were getting Putt Putt or SP.
This graphic was also on S2 & S3 Stuka and Corsair boxes, but obviously with windows those birds were not mysteries. Hope this helps.
