Spray on Mud

I just sort of came up with what i think is a good idea. I'm working on a little vignette with a 1/18 tinplate Renault FT-17 light tank i bought from Ebay last year. Anyway, the piece calls for a lot of mud on the vehicle and i was trying to figure out an easy but effective way of doing it.

Being that i'm the laziest person the the planet i was searching the net, hoping to find a product for model builders that is simulated mud in a spray can. You spray it on to your tank and it dries permanently.

What i stumbled on was a product for SUV owners that is literally mud in a spray bottle, that city slickers spray onto their 4x4's to make it look as though they have been off roading (pathetic i know).

Well, that gave me the idea of going one step further and mixing white glue in with the mud. I've done this mixture with small bits of groundwork in the past and it dries rock hard and permanent (unless you plan to soak it in the bathtub).

So, i'm going to mix up a large spray bottle of the stuff and spray it onto my little Renault tank.

Before i do i thought i'd throw this idea out there to see if anyone has tried this and if so were there any pitfalls?

one of the model company make a wealthing kit and a mud rust kit.

i saw it but have never use it.

also some board member use art chaulk to wealther..

if any one use these kid let me know how it goes.

Morian, i sh!@ thee not... It was 'invented' in the UK and retails for $12.95US for a small bottle that fits inside a boot...

All it is is Salsbury dirt that has been filtered of stones etc, mixed with water and bottled.

I don't know which is dumber, spraying your SUV with mud to make it look like you've been off road in it or buying mud...

Black Dragon: the only problem with using chalks, pastels, cellulite clay etc to make mud mixutres is that it's a lot of work mixing and then applying to all the nooks and cranny's is a real pain, especially on a large 1/18 model.

That's why i was looking for something spray on that with a few 'whoooshes' i can cover the desired area (please see my 'i'm the laziest person on the planet' comment

).

i have not gone off roading for a while, just too afraid to break something and have to call a towl truck....thus costing 1 to 2 xd stuff just to bet my car back.

This past weekend I was at Home Depot and noticed that in the paint dept. there was a compound that comes in a spray can that is used to patch ceilings that have the white 'pop-corn' texture and as well it is used for dry wall texture. I forget the name of the product, but this stuff could be used to give that muddy affect? It comes out white but could be painted to whatever earth tones you would need after it dries. It is a polymer base so it could be used on plastics.

i've tried that stuff once. 2 problems: you have to use a lot to get any significant texture effect and subsequent painting is tough. It forms all kinds of nooks and crannies and is very porous so it absorbs paint like a sponge. Takes a fair bit of effort to get it painted so that no white shows. If it would come in a muddy colour it would be pretty good though.

I thought I'd do one better, I'm going to start selling my dog's poop for City Slickers or any Yuppies that want people to think they have a dog but just dont have the time to really own one.

I would think that eventually the mud will turn back to dirt and fall or crumble off. I remember playing in the mud with my Tonka trucks as a kid. No mater how muddy they got , it would come off later after it dried. Oh yeah, running them together helped shake the stuff off too.
