New 1/20 Model - Chinese Type 98
Found it on EvilBay for $38, plus $20 for shipping & insurance (supposedly retails for $84, so I'm still a few bucks ahead).
The kit is by Trumpeter, so I'm expecting pretty good quality.

So, it looks like some OPFOR possibilities are opening up...

awesome tank...the hul is basically that of the t 72, its just a meter longer, the turret is new, an indigenous design as the attempts at that time to get the then new leopard 1 were blocked..
anyone have pics of this thing built, preferrably with something in the pic toget an idea of its size? i found som pics online, but none with it next to something that shows its size...........perhaps a pic of it next to a ruler or 1:18 or 3 3/4 figure? any help would be much appreciated..
thanks,
Zhukov

Type 98 Chinese MBT
I had posted some info on this model a year or so ago the stats on the Type 98 and T-72. I will try to find the info because I keep the conversions for comparison. Also depends on the type model of the T-72, I ran into several different measurements but not to far off. I used the following sites:
http://www.sovietarmy.com/vehicles/t-72.html
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... -specs.htm
Global security website will also provide some pics of the T-72 to include a person to tank comparison (pulled from some old Army Vehicle Recognition cards).
T-72 Dimesions:
_____________Meters___Feet______1/18 Scale Conversion (Model in Inches)
Overall Length: 9.2_____30.18'_____20.12" Soviet Army Site
Chassis Length: 6.91_____22.67'_____15.11" Global Security
________Width: 3.6_____11.81'_____7.87" Soviet Army
_______Height: 2.3______7.54'______5.02" Soviet Army
Just compare these dimesions with your Type 98 model and it really isn't that far off. Depending which site you use, you will get a different conversion but as said, it's not that far off. I haven't had the opportunity to convert the turret to a T-72 but I just painted it and called it a T-72.
However, a simple conversion is convert it to a T-72-120, the skirts that hang over the turret could be used made to hide the square shape of the Type 98 turret. Look at the following link for some info on that version. http://www.morozov.com.ua/eng/body/t72-120.php .
I'm also working on a custom BTR-60 using the chassis of a GI Joe personnel carrier and styrene.
I will try to find some images of the completed Type 98 model. I have some sitting next to the BBI M1 Abrams.

Well, I have my kit in hand, but I'm about to go out of town for a week.
When I get back, I'll try to take some pics with the model parts next to the Abrams...
I'm probably several months from starting the kit, due to my "real" job, my temp contract, and other things. (Life is what happens while you're making other plans...)

Pics Type 98 vs BBI M1 Abrams
I have link to old set of pictures I took back in 2004 that compare the BBI Abrams and the Type 98.
The Type 98 can almost pass as 1/18 scale T-72 vehicle based on the data I provided above; not 100% but considering there is nothing out there right now, this is not a bad vehicle.

Sometimes I wonder if the BBI is little over scale but my understanding is that Abrams is larger than the T-72 anyways.
