Does anyone have info on the vehicle identification numbers on the side of WWII German army vehicles? How are the vehicles assigned the numbers? I know one number is vehicle, one number is Platoon and another number is Company or something like that, I just cannot remember. I had a web page that had a break down but lost it.
Thanks Lance

Oh I got this info from a book by Jentz. I've seen this info on the web, but I can't remember where.
Krieglock, I believe that the tanks with 0 in the beginning (007, 008) are Stab (headquarters) tanks, and do not belong to the platoons. In theory, platoon leaders would have the no.1 tank on the platoon, like 221, but more often than not, commanders often switch tanks, because of various reasons (like the platoon commander's tank broke down, so he commandeer the next available tank.)
I'm basing this info on the organization of s.Pz.Abts, (Tiger battalions), so regular panzer units might have different organizational numbering.
