251 backdate, Pickelhabue's kit.
Today I started a sd kfz 251/1 backdate kit that Pickelhabue made in 2015. Sometimes it
takes me a while to get things started......
New in the box.....at the time of the picture.
I started taking/cutting the 251 apart today. With any luck I'll have more pics tomorrow.
The first one will in DAK colors.

Re: Starting 251 backdate, Pickelhabue's kit.
Here is the rear section from Pickelhaube's kit...I must say the amount of work Matthew put into this is amazing, but
he always goes all out!
Not the best pictures but it gives an idea of what 251 backdate kit will look like; note the distinctive
shape of the rear of the early 251's.
Just getting a feel of how things will go together.
The parts that are included in the kit.
As time permits, I'll keep you up dated.

Super cool. That kit is excellent. I really wanted to modify one of my 251's as well but can't seem to clear out the queue on my workbench as is. I'm glad to see one evolve in living color. Thanks for sharing Normandy!

Thanks for your comments Grunt! It is an excellent kit, and Pickelhaube put a lot of time into it.
Got a few more pics....used Tamiya XF 59 Desert Yellow for the base coat and XF 60 Dark Yellow
over that.
I replaced the MG42 that came with the 251 with an MG34 from a 21st Panzer IV.
Plenty more to do.......

Looking good.
It looks like you had to split the part to line up.
Check your cut because it all should fit on without having to cut the part.

Pickel, which part are you referring to? The only cut I made was to the rear of the 251.

Looking good so far, Normandy! Are you going to do a DAK scheme?

Not the best pic but work continues....
...the 251 on the right has one of Pickel's custom canvas tops, I've covered with cotton material
to give it a scale look.

Hey Normandy, this looks fantastic. I recently learned that some of the earlier versions with these doors were riveted not welded in some areas like the front cowling. There is a nice riveted DAK Ausf. C example with these doors that was moved from Aberdeen to the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin.

I hadn't realized that some of the C versions were like that Grunt.
I found a video from the museum you were at and their 251 C, I don't
think I'll be attempting a riveted version anytime soon, just to many.

Re: 251 backdate, Pickelhabue's kit.
A little more progress
Notice anything different about this 251?
I've always wanted to do a custom job to the front end. 21st did a great
job on these vehicles, the wheels spin and move up and down but don't turn.
So today was the day I figured it out.
pic of 1:1 front end / wheel.

The work on this particular piece was an experiment....it works but I may change a few things, I went simple not scale detailed.

I have a link to the custom front end http://www.warbird-photos.com/gpxd/view ... =9&t=36021 this
might make it easier than hunting for it here.

This is right up my alley. Mine has looked like this:
for years. I’m hoping my cut isn’t too far off.
Is this kit still available?
