Bookcase display base for 1:18

Post by normandy » Sun Mar 12, 2017 3:18 pm

I wanted something I could display my armor and vehicles on in limited space and something not dedicated
to a particular piece.

another....

These are made of insulation board, grass mats and other items as you can see in this pic...

I'll put a list of materials up later if anyone is interested, bases around 11" x 17".

Awesome work! Please do list the materials as your work looks fantastic and has given me some ideas :D

I'm working on a larger 36"x36" display board for multiple armor and building pieces. Its just simple dirt affixed to a cork board right now (for flexibility in where I position the the vehicles and buildings) but I want to spruce it up.

Still, I really like what you've done.

Very nice. Been thinking of similar things for a small corner shelving unit I have. Kind of a rotational display system.

Thanks for the comments. These two bases were an attempt at using hobby supplied, found and natural materials
to make believable looking diorama bases.

The hobby materials would be the grass mats, moss and pet supply items....

The "found" item is a used scrubbing pad that is used to chemically remove wax from floors. If you know anyone who is a custodian, they'll know what your looking for.
The pad can be pulled apart in small pieces and then glue (I used water based) applied and than moss added......

this pad is black and was spray painted tan before the moss was glued on.
Image

Here is the moss, comes in bags or sheets or look in the woods...

Pet shops are a good place for supplies....just one pic here.
Image

My plan is to make a much larger base longer than these that I've posted, for display and photography purposes.
Panzerpaul's dioramas gave me some ideas....buildings come later....

Awesome, thanks Normandy!

I'm slowly developing a larger diorama board for setting up some displays, etc. Originally I was just going to keep it a flat dirt base for versatility, but having seen your pics above, I now plan to attempt adding some more terrain and foliage in places.

To make your own flock, use maple tree sawdust. The finer the better. you can treat it with glycerine and other chemicals to pull out the cellulose and Semi-cellulose, & effluents which removes dye / pigments from virtually anything so you would have no color distortion, and you have you own environmentally flock and Pigments that will never break down and fall apart like the Woodland Scenics, a stuffnd the other guys... i cant believe they sell twigs for &9.00. I have tons of maple, oak, cherry, walnut, hickory, Osage Orange, cherry.... sawdust if any one wants some, they make great pigments / products for weathering and texture. Just seal them with UV protection . Also have lots of shale in 40 different colors, Flint & coal .. A very large train yard is not too far away..

Wanna get rich, grow a lot of Maple trees in non-acidic soil and in 20 years sell them to bio-medical firms :)

For anyone who has an A.C.Moore craft store near them they have very serviceable grass mats in the fake flower section. They also have large and small plastic diorama bases near the model car/paint section. I turn the bases upside down so I have a "baking pan" and I can fill it with styrofoam to make trenches or bunkers. I took the old deck from a Panzer IV after I put the new Stugg deck on and now have a "dug in " tank. A.C.Moore gives 15% discount to vets and teachers and also will send you 50-55% off coupons via email several times a week if you get their rewards card. Soooo with my 15% plus 55% I mostly get about 65% off. Great "tow" chains in their jewelry dept. Have fun. Bob

Thanks Jon.
I remember the woofers display as well, it was very impressive. I'd love to have the space for something
like that. I had saved the pictures of it but sadly they've been lost with the photo bucket pay or loose your
pics program.

Still working on this display base, I may have a few pictures tomorrow.

I also remember flyboy made some amazing backgrounds of houses buildings in remnants. I think I have some of the woofers pictures saved somewhere if I find them I'll post them to my Flickr and post them here.
