Looking for input for casting my own parts

So,

I got the Alumilite Super Casting kit from Hobby Lobby and was wanting to know any tips, hints, or tricks when casting parts. The first part I want to cast is the centerline fuel tank from the JSI Corsair so I can mount it on another custom corsair I'm working on.

Looking for information like, if the part I want to cast is painted, will it mess up the paint or is there a way to avoid that or will it be fine as is.

I don't plan on mass producing, but maybe making 1 or 2 pieces of something.

Good luck, I've tried to use that kit myself with mixed results. The RTV is fine but the resin is quite finicky. One thing I noticed is you have to make up a good amount at the same time or it won't cure right. I tried doing small batches and it never would set correctly.

I have used alumalight products and I am not happy with the product.

As YT mention the RTV is alright but the resin is so-so.

You must mix both parts fully before you pour your amount out that you want to use.

MIX THOROLLY AND WAIT AT LEAST 1/2 HOUR BRFORE MIXING THE PARTS TOGETHER.

Their resin sets crazy fast if you over mix it may set as you pour. so make sure everything is ready before you mix up.

Micro Mark sells resin that is a lot more user friendly more expensive but it is more forgiving.

But all laughing aside, I've been wanting to buy that kit, and this thread will be very helpful to me, and in this case, I'll be able to make my own extra tanks for my F-18!

The most important thing I haven't seen mentioned is using mold release on your part. Otherwise the silicone will stick. I use Ease Release 200.

If your not going to degas the silicone you can reduce bubbles by pouring the silicone from 3-4 feet. That will break small bubbles. Once the silicone is poured, spraying the silicone mold release will reduce the surface tension and allow the bubbles to expand easier.
