FOV 1:700 Ships

Post by USCGMK2 » Sun Oct 12, 2014 1:33 pm

Hello,

I was interested in the quality of the FOV 1:700 ships, I was looking at the Yamato, Missouri, and Arizona. I was curious to know if they worth the price? Thanks in advance.

I like the FOV 1:700 scale ships and they make a great variety. If you remember the old Gearbox 1:700 ships from 5-10 years ago, the FOV models are very similar - so much so that they can be displayed together without issue. The superstructure detail on the FOV ships is detailed with generally crisp-looking parts. On the FOV models, the lower part of the hull (below the waterline) is diecast while they upper part of the hull and superstructure are plastic. There is a seam between the diecast and plastic parts, but since its at the waterline, its not as noticeable... By comparison, the old Gearbox ships had an entirely diecast hull with plastic superstructure and are heavier than the FOV models. FOV does put in a lot of the little details like rotating/elevating turrets, rotating cranes, etc.

I have the Yamato, Tirpitz, Bismarck, and HMS Hood thus far with the FOV ships. I have the USS Missouri, USS Indianapolis, USS Hornet, and USS Essex in 1:700 scale from Gearbox. I've been looking to get the HMS Ark Royal, USS Arizona, and USS Enterprise (modern carrier) from FOV eventually.

In my opinion, the FOV modes are overpriced... All of the Gearbox models I have I purchased for about $15 a piece and they have more diecast and about the same level of detail as the $70 FOV models. However, FOV makes a greater variety of ships and has a number of famous foreign ships that Gearbox never made, so I tend to pick those up from FOV when I feel that I have the funds to spare.

I know the above is all sort of a ramble, but hope it helps!

No, that's perfect. I have the Nichimo 1/200 Yamato and I'm getting ready to sell it and was looking for something smaller and done. I have several waterline series ships unbuilt, but I know the FOV are full hull and thats the only issue with them for me now that i've read your opinion. Decisions Decisions.
