It's a Sd. Kfz 303. The german soldier operating it is actually representing a polish resistance fighter (note the red and white arm band). Goliath's were used to great effect during the '44 Warsaw uprising, blasting barricades and taking out large numbers of resistance fighters. The usual way the Poles had of dealing with them was for a volunteer to run up behind the advancing Goliath and try to cut the control wire...always under a hail of machine gun fire. I believe it was mostly 303's used in Warsaw.
Goliath's intended roll was to destroy road blocks, fortificatons and troop concentrations but they were also used sometimes in an anti tank role. The 302's were apparently used to good effect at Kursk, in clearing mine fields....production did not begin on the 303 until Jan '44, so they were not at Kursk. Maybe if this is a hit Grunt can make us an earlier version as well some day.
Both versions saw action on all fronts, right up to the end of the war and there were even some on the Normandy beaches. While a great conecpt, the slow speed, lack of suitable armor protection and vulnerable control wires meant that many never reached their target. When they did though they were devastating.
