Corsair breakdown suggestions - UPDATE #3
Hi all,
We are currently restoring an FG-1D Corsair at the Connecticut Air and Space Center in Stratford Ct. My son and I are going to repaint a 1/18 Corsair in the perspective scheme that is planned for this aircraft. We wanted to put it in a case for the volunteers to look at as sort of an inspiration. I was wondering if anyone had taken one of these apart or had any tips about dismantling it?

His timing was just right to show-off his Nazi stuff on Holocaust Rememberance Day. Some of us are not very appreciative of seeing Hitler S--t on this board. I for one lost family to that A-Hole.

Uh, that's all very nice but we do have a plan. The museum director has stated that the plan is to have it painted as it would have looked in 1945 when it was rolled out of the factory.
This is what were aiming for.
We are looking for tips to take the prop off, and anything else. Thanks in advance.

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
There is no real " easy" way to do it. You need to find the screws .
They are hidden under little round caps along the fusalage. Pry off the caps and unscrew the screws.
Then you will have to pry apart the fusalage. Screwed and glued.
The wings were assembled the same way. It is a real pain some times trying to get the screw caps off.
One they are off to gain access to the screws the caps are ruined so count on using putty to fill the holes
That is the only way I know how to take 'em apart.

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Jollyroger, it might be better just to mask the prop/cowl opening than trying to break it down.
You can pull the wings out (step one of the wing folding sequence) which should give you some gap to paint between (mask the folding mechanism).
The small forward facing gear doors can be easily removed so you can then mask the landing gear/wheel wells.
The main gear doors may need to be propped half way closed while you paint them, along with the wing area.
Things like the rudder would need a few light passes to get inside of the hinge areas (ie push the rudder hard left and lightly paint the inside joint area. Let it dry and do the other side with rudder pushed hard right)
I'm assuming you'll be using an airbrush?

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Joc, I did not know it was Holocaust Day. I thought the picture was bazaar and hilarious. I don't see how it could have glorified him in any way, on the contrary I thought it showed him and his cronies in a more realistic light, as thugs and street rats which they were. I removed it and I hope that any offense I caused to anyone on the forum can be forgiven. Im very sorry.JOC wrote:His timing was just right to show-off his Nazi stuff on Holocaust Rememberance Day. Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Hey jnewboy, was your captured Corsair an XD one? Did you break it down much, or did you repaint it while it was pretty much together?

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
I plan on painting mine all together. Usually better to paint them all together like that, not in parts...

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Thanks everyone. Masking off instead of taking apart is most likely the way to go.
Jnewboy: your Corsair did come out nice and is very interesting.

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Thats a 21st century one, I liked it better as I think the canopy fit better, more smooth where as my bbi daisy june one seems to bubble slightly. I didnt take it apart, I just made the pylons and hollowed out the exhaust holes, masked over the engine, prop and canopy, shot it green, masked that and then shot the yellow.
That KG200 paint scheme I painted is a standard one that many of their captured planes were painted but unknown how the corsair was painted, only read about it, never any pictures that Ive seen.

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Just read this thread again, noticed the deleted threads and what some had seen as maybe being out of order about a avatar, I know this person and I know what was posted was totally in jest, mostly to make the subject for what they were.
This is a WWII collecting site and sometimes the subject does invoke some personal feelings, and as I have found it should be addressed in a private message, seems you talk to a person and you find out where their coming from.

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions
Here's a quick update. We decided to try to do a small breakdown. Well the word fits because we broke one of the wings at the hinges! The prop seemed to be attached with a shaft that had a large flange on the back side of the engine. After that was removed to get the prop off I had to make another type of retainer to keep the prop on and also be able to spin. For some reason it seems that the Corsair props are bent forward so I used a high intensity heat gun to soften the blades at the hub and reposition them back a little bit. Some of it has already been painted the dark sea blue now we just have to mask off the nose and shoot the fuselage. We are now waiting for the stars and prop decals to come in.

Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions - UPDATE
Latest shot of our Corsair after my son painted it and put it back together. The tires seemed kind of pointy so I cut them down to a more reasonable look. Also we added a set of covers to the wheel hubs to hide the Phillips screw heads. Still waiting for our decals.
Re: Corsair breakdown suggestions - UPDATE
Just a side note. Did the two doors that cover the rear wheel cause any problems? Can't count how many Corsairs I've either built over the years or of the few I own in both 1:32 and 1:18 scale that break off eventually. Just wunnerin'.
