1/18 jagdpanzer iv from panzer iv

Post by aferguson » Fri Feb 24, 2012 11:48 am

i was mulling future custom ideas and was doing some digging on the jagdpanzer iv. It is my understanding that it was almost a foot wider than the standard panzer iv, meaning the hull would have to be widened somehow on the custom.

But then i came across this 1/16 conversion set for the Heng Long panzer iv, which looks to me that it is just plopped onto the standard HL panzer iv without widening it.

Are they just ignoring the wider hull or am i missing something?

Nope, not wider, just longer. The new wedge-type interlocking bow armor plate made it a few inches longer than the panzer IV hull. That and the gun also made the vehicle nose-heavy and necessitated the use of all steel roadwheels on the front four positions on each side, especially on the L/70 versions.

there i go trusting wikipedia again. It has the width for the jagdpanzer iv as 3.17m. Other sources say 2.93m.

Width for the panzer iv is 2.88m so the JP is actually wider by almost 2 inches but that's not much to worry about. It's not the 12 inches i originally thought.

that's nice Normandy. How did you make the gun mantlet? My best idea is to get some super sculpy and try to shape it as best i can.

Andrew, you got it! The gun mantlet is super sculpy, I tried a few things but that worked the best. The gun mount armor is sheets of styrene glued together and sanded into shape.

Flyboy, here is a good link with line drawings of the Jagdpanzer. You can right click...view image...print... and then take the copies to staples to get them enlarged to 1:18th.
I'll look for the drawings I used and if I find them, I'll send you a set.

that's ok Normandy, thanks anyway but i have a paper model that i'm going to scale up and use for templates. Good to know the sculpy idea works. Now just to do the work...lol.
