Any interest in diorama stuff?

Post by flyboy_fx » Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:31 pm

Well, I plan on one day maybe having an online store of my own, until then I'll use an Ebay store. Just to... test the waters.

Will there be any interest in diorama stuff? Kinda like what Build-a-rama offers, but more stuff?

Here's a brief rundown of examples of stuff I will offer: plaster cast stone walls, statues, pots, wells, short brick walls, large brick walls, stone walls, ruble, dragons teeth, and lots of other small building related stuff cast in plaster.

Plaster will hold up very good, however, only for small diorama items. I've tried, and it's a pain in the butt to cast large buildings. The buildings cast in plaster are heavy and fragile! My buildings will continue to be made from foam. Light weight, one of a kind, and durable. But you will see smaller items such as brick walls cast in plaster. Foam walls have a tendency to blow over, not a problem with plaster. I will also cast them in dark grey, so if you chip one on accident, you will not notice it (Plaster of paris is normally white). Also, smaller items like walls cast in plaster, are strong! I have not come across cracking and breaking problems yet.

I'll cast a large selection of other items in resin. Like: carts, wagons, buckets, water spouts, ect... That will be available later on.

Thinking of offering all my plaster stuff in unpainted and painted forms. So if you want to save some money, you can buy it in grey and paint it yourself. I'll probably have tutorials too, free of course. I'm going to keep my prices as cheap as I can! I want to keep everything affordable.

And lets not over look other scales, I will make 1/32 and 35th buildings as well. Those are small enough to be replicated in plaster. I'll sell those in unpainted kits, as well as painted and assembled. Not to mention, I'll also have lots of diorama items in those scales too!

I'll also do some stuff in 1/6. Stuff like dragons teeth, ruble, stone walls, ect.

What would you guys think? Any of you into diorama stuff? If you have ideas on stuff to offer, send them to: flyboyfx@gmail.com with, "Diorama Ideas" as the title, pictures are welcomed.

I believe its a great idea, seems maybe the 1:32 and 1:18 would do very well, myself, I would be interested in some 1:32, a
few pieces in a display cabinet would really make a difference.

I have always like your buildings, and i think it is a great idea to make them in plaster and more affordable.I must admit that i would rather like the painted version because i don't know how to make the weathering effects. It is good thing that you will have tutorials too. That will encourage some of us to buy the unpainted pieces.I guess bunkers will be done too in plaster? and you mention that foam walls have a tendency to blow over.excuse my ignorance but what does it mean?

Yes, this would be great. I'd lean more toward war items like dragons teeth than pots and shrubbery, etc.. And if they were items that Build-o-rama or 21C never made, even better.

Verlinden and some of the other 1/16th makers have a gob of tools, ammo crates, etc.. that would be good fodder for 1:18.

Sorry, brain is tired and I can't accurately convey my thoughts. To clarify, meant blow over from wind. My large houses do not have this problem, just little individual wall sections.

Grunt1, thanks for those links! Ideas always help!

More 1/18 items like diorama pieces are great. I think your pieces are high quality and would sell well on ebay or online. Please make more items. As mentioned stuff that Buildarama hasn't done would be nice.

I'll sell stuff like this. Image

Painted and unpainted. Plaster cast of course. If I cast in resin, it would cost way more!!!

I think plaster will feel more realistic.I don't know why but, when it comes to tanks ,i prefer the diecast versions rather than the plastic version.same with walls.plaster is the closest thing available comparable to concrete.resin is more impact resistant, but it will be more expensive. So i think plaster will work very well.I wish you good luck.Count me in for diorama pieces.
