Side projects

As most of you know I usually only do the large scale models like 1/18 aircraft and 1/18 & 1/16 Armor but once in awhile I am prompted to do other stuff, but I only do it if it is big

So normally you would never see my name associated with anything in 1/72 scale but in the past month and this month I will have done 2 projects in 1/72

The first was Revell's U-552, Erich Topp's boat, winner of the knights cross with oak leaves and swords and survived the war. I built it for myself, like all my models but am reluctant on offering it up for any price as I would not want it damaged in the mail. Here is a pic of it next to a familiar 1/18 tanker and a 1/72 Me-109 to give you all some perspective on its size.







It took some time, for sure, this isn't camera tricks. Im really proud of this model, every time I look over at it I start hearing the theme from "Das Boot"






The second will be a JU-390 in 1/72, I am building it for my father for his birthday but I may offer it on my Etsy store as a build on demand project someday once I can get caught up with all the other projects hanging over my head. I will post pics when done.

That's fantastic! 1:72 is a great scale for boat models, particularly that size. I've got a 1:144 scale U-boat kit that once belonged to my younger brother & has been sitting in the attic for about 10 years unfinished...

Great job on the U-boat, the detail work is excellent , I built the Academy motorized kit years ago, I did'nt use any of the electronics because it went in our aquarium, it made a great wreck on the bottom, only problem was after a year or so parts started falling off, the glue could'nt handle all that water

Nice! There's the WWII US Gato class sub by Revell too. A little larger from what I understand.

Some of the 1:32 twin engine bombers like the new Revell He-111 and JU-88 are as big in mass as a 1:18 fighter, so that's an option for big model planes other than 1:18.

Yep! I really want one of those He-111 kits! Im also always tempted to get one of those 1/48 Me 323 Gigant kits!

Really like your U-boat,

I've got one built and undercoated, but it went back in the box as I went onto other stuff.

I do have the Revell 1/72 Gato class built and complete. it's about 4ft long and it actually dwarfs the German sub. When I get everything out of storage I'll post pictures of it.

When I was researching the Gato, I read that the paint used on the U.S. subs was quite hard wearing so I didn't weather it to the same extent that I was originally going to do. However, when I get time to finish it, my U-Boat is going to be the opposite, and show every sign of having been on a long patrol in the Atlantic.

Look forward to seeing the Junkers too!

The largest plane of WWII, with 6 engines I'll bet it dwarfs the Monogram 1:48 B-29

I can't bring myself to go under 1:32. The scale seems to be taking off slowly. Once the 4 engine bombers like the delayed Wingscale B-17G start coming out then it'll really peak.

I'm hoping to get that HE-111 soon though. Battle of Britain hanging from my mancave ceiling!
