Which 1/18 body would you put your head onto?

Post by acisne » Wed Aug 10, 2011 12:15 pm

Don't know if this was posted before, but I thought is was neat. This company will 3D scan your head, sculpt it and mount is on a body of your choice. Mine would probably be a Darth Vader.

any idea how much that costs? That is hilarious. The likenesses are amazing.

I'd probably put mine on the 21c Me-262 pilot.

Here's a site that will do something similar, though a little lower tech and not quite so realistic. You post 1-2 photos, pay them, and receive the head sculpt/figure in the mail.

http://www.thatsmyface.com

You even have a choice of bodies, if you care to go that far. Starting at $49 for a basic 1:18 head, or $79 for a 1:18 figure.

Have fun...

that's pretty neat. It would make a cool gift idea too. I wonder if you can send in any pictures you want? Like, oh say, Angelina Jolie...

Fergie:

You want Angelina Joline's head on your body?

Or do you want your head on Joline's body?

I'm confused and it seems just too kinky for me. 8)

For Sci-Fi, rebel pilot. *
For WWII, one of the Operation Market Garden figures (w/ me wearing an late 1930s Pittsburgh Pirates hat to complete the look).

Rebel pilot or Airborne, the potential is cool either way. Either I get a really cool 1:18 ride (the Rebel X-wings) or I get a bag full of canteens, pouches, knives, etc. that are the best thing since 1:6 GI Joe!

* I just hope my big head could still fit in one of the helmets, and I'd customize it with a Bavarian lozengy style logo.

actually TTT, i was thinking of putting Jolie's head on slave leai's body.

But i do think this is a pretty cool idea, if the likenesses are good. If one was willing to spend the money and could customize a body, you could do a figure of anyone you wanted. Famous historical people (who was the guy that wanted a 1/18 stalin?), movie stars, politicians, sports figures, or somebody near and dear to you.

For me, I'd go with the new Fleet Trooper (especially since it would swap then onto a bunch of other SW Rebel Troopers/Pilots ;) ), and for WW2 I'd go with just a simple one of the 21st D-Day figures I think. Again it'd swap to a ton of other bodies easily. Maybe the tanker they made with the removable hat since he's fairly generic.

I have a couple of 1/6 Colonial Marines (Hicks and Vasquez) that, with their ton of equipment, would be crying out for my head on either body.

Actually, I love the idea.

I've always seen myself as a Colonial Marine....... a fat old Marine, but still a Colonial Marine.

I don't know, but it better be super-duper-frickin'-articulated. At least 14 points. Maybe an Arc Trooper.

Articulation. Everybody knows that the POTF2 Palpatine was a step backwards in action figure evolution -- he was a uni-leg monstrosity. Jesse would never be able to sit in any 1:18 vehicle. What is more unspeakable is the fact that Hasbro has repeated this crime against toys several times into the era of super articulation.

The real question is how many of us would be buying one of every weapon on Marauder to equip ourselves with ... well basically everything. :)

Now back at you ... would your 1:18 self be Hicks or Vasquez? ;)

(They should consider making a modern articulation series of Alien and Aliens figures ... probably wouldn't sell but to a fringe market, but it would be cool to have come Colonial Marines.)

There have been 1/18 Colonial Marines and Aliens made and it was very popular,

Google Hot Toys Aliens Snap Kit,

made of plastic, painted and some assembly required by snapping joints together, very articulated and detailed. They've been OOP for some time and quite hard to find now but may get lucky on ebay or at retail shops selling japanese gashapons. I've got some Appleseed figures and they're pretty good. Appleseed, Aliens and AVP are the only ones made so far.

As for the head, freaky and very cool at the same time. I find myself looking thru my figure collection thinking of the possiblities... SW, Joes, etc. Probably thinking 1/6th scale size would be best in detail, size and humour factor, swop the head around the bodies of Bruce Lee Kato, a Fallschirmjager or a 160th SOAR crewman

This has got me thinking, could this be a future side branch evolution of figure making for 1/6th and 1/18th? If the tech is available to scan actors heads, make a prototype, scale them accordingly and make molds of them. Then we could have actor accurate looks of movie characters. 1/6th sculpting is at a very high standard to likeness already but still room for improvement and 1/18th is a whole new possible market. If they can somehow do 3D scans on characters of old films, we might even get a Luke Skywalker figure looking like a Luke Skywalker and not some spaced out lazy eyed junkie but then again thats probably still at the mercy of the chinese factory worker painting the eyes.

Was thinking that companies like Admiral that tried and failed in the figure sculpture arena would do well to make use of a service like this. Am thinking of their F-86 driver, and hoping I don't have nightmares tonight... :)

Lots of celebrity sculpts on thatsmyface.com: Bruce Willises and Obamas, among others.

I didn't see anything that said you couldn't post the photo of somebody famous, though there are probably general copyright disclaimers (and don't even THINK about doing Chuck Yeager, thank you very much). They do say the images need to be color and directly face-on or from the side. Perhaps one of the more talented computer artists could colorize a B&W image, or even do a respectable portrait of someone for whom a face-on image isn't available.

I inquired about whether they could return a 3D image file rather than a physical sculpt but was told they "don't offer that service."

Just some random thoughts...

Cheers

Ugh, who'd want to be the old Sith anyway? I'd rather be a younger one or a Mandalorian instead if I was going to be a baddie. :) Nah, for me it's all about being one of the soldiers, ultimately for the Alliance since I just think they're more badass. Fleet Trooper, Commando, Hoth Gear, and Pilot outfit after pilot outfit.

Or maybe a McQuarrie Art Vader, with a removable helmet. He's slick.

I'd also want to be a GI Joe... just something fairly generic. Like a greenshirt that I could, as mentioned above, outfit with basically every cool weapon/accessory I can get from Marauder and my own parts bins... I used to do that with my GI Joes that were my favorites back in the day. They'd wear Arab Disguise Indiana Jones' robe for "cold weather combat", they always had Han's pistol, they always had a real string rope/grappling hook, they always had the coolest knife/sword, a cool machine gun like an Uzi...

The basic trend was that if it was easy to lose, they probably had it... For some reason, the smaller/easily lost accessories were the ones that were always the best, like Snake Eyes' uzi, Indiana Jones' pistol (or practically any SW figure's pistol), or Flint's sawed off shotgun was always a favorite. Oh, and Yoda's Snake and Mutt's Rotweiler were their pets, obviously.

Finally gave this some thought...

I'd go for the BBI P-51 pilot body. I always liked that figure - its a good generic WWII pilot.

I already switched the heads on one of my BBI P-51 pilots with one of the paratroops that had red hair so it at least has a passing resemblance to me

You sure you ain't a clone trooper ... you sound an awfully lot like somebody else I know ... me. ;)

(The Indy robe was great and the Kenner Hoth battle back with backpacks and the grappling hook and gas masks were one of the best elements of the original star wars line. It is the ability to slightly customize that makes some of the later 21c US forces and Operations Market Garden the best. Oh look I want this guy to carry 2 knives, so I'll clip one here and the other here.)

Return of the Jedi's Rancor Keeper. Just kidding. :P Actually, if it were a Star Wars or GI Joe body, it would depend on that figure's job and accessories. I'd say I'd put my head on any figure from Fisher Price's Adventure People line from the '70s and early '80s. Very tough and outdoorsy.

For durability, the vintage Fisher Price Adventure People have held well. They aren't like golden retrievers and in need of hip (O-ring) replacement. Rarely do they drop thumbs (vintage 3 3/4" joes) and are 100% water proof.
