Sd.Kfz 7 measurements in 1:18?

Post by grunt1 » Sat Jul 30, 2011 8:50 pm

Anyone know how long and wide a Sd.Kfz 7 would be in 1:18 scale? I know there was one in 1:16 a while back that was too big.

I know I can make one. I just seem to screw up the measurements the first time around. This is either due to poor conversion math when the original measurements are bad, like on the BBI F-16 or when the measurements are right but they don't fit the 21st Century figures in reality. I had to go to Aberdeen to get the Pack Howitzer and Nebelwerfers right. I was at Littlefields two weeks ago and there was an Sdkfz7 there but I didn't have my tools, nor had I indicated I needed extra time as I was just poking around on that visit, so I need to go back but that won't be until November.

Pickels method of scaling up parts from a 1/35 model seems to work well but sometimes those are screwed up too and still don't account for the 21st Century figure issue.

By the way, this issue applies to a bunch of stuff not just the 7.

It's really pretty simple, G1. If you use a 1/35 kit double it and you have 1/17.5. Now from there you can either reduce the size by 2.85% (you're allowed to use a calculator for this :) ). Or, if the compatibilty with figures is a concern, then leave it. It's just 3 % overscale, hardly noticable but the extra bit of size will give a tad more room for the figures.

I don't think you need to be such a stickler. Most of the 21c stuff is off in scale slightly, i'm talking a couple of percent. It's meaningless.

By far the simplest approach would be to scale up a 1/35 model, every piece of it. Even if the model is not exactly 1/35 scale, due to manufacturer's error, it will be very very close and your end product will thus be very very close. Nobody will notice the diff.

As far as the xd figures not fitting properly in your 1/18 products....well, that's par for the course. They don't fit properly in the 21c vehicles either. People have been complaining about that since day one but there is nothing to be done about it, save making the vehicles way overscale, which is not a good option, in my view.
