Red Baron DrI?

Hello, I don't do 1:18 but a friend of mine really likes the Red Baron's DrI triplane. But all the scales I can find are too small for his tastes. Can anyone lead me to a reasonably priced 1:18 Red Baron? All I've found are $190 mahogany models. Thanks.

I think the Revell 1/28 Dr.I triplane is about the largest plastic model available. I've got it and it's pretty nice.

Arizona Models, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/3 scales.

VK Models, 1/6 scale?

MQ, 1/12 through 1/3.

Oops, didn't read the last part of your statement. Yeah I haven't seen the Red Baron in 1:18 scale other then in wood. The prices range from $165 to over $249.
Check ebay from time to time, you never know what you'll find there. But keep in mind chances are if you do find one in that scale you'll probably end up paying a lot for it anyways especially if its a custom ("1 of kind"). Good luck!

Yes, I forgot to mention that one. Closer to 1/13 scale. Built the die cut version in the sixties. It's laser cut now and a lot more precise and pleasant to build. Started the laser cut version (and an SE5), have the various components built, but lost interest while applying the silkspan. I need to find a good way to apply it to scalloped trailing edges of the wings.

I looked at some pictures of builds in progress of the Dr1 and noticed that many of the plastic parts are crude looking. I know that probably has a lot to do with weight issues and the use of very old molds but I'm wondering if there are any upgrade sets for any of the Guillow's kits like photetched or resin parts.

Yeah, I think we've been spoiled with all the high quality 1/18 models. The Guillow's styrene parts leave a lot to be desired. The airframe structure isn't accurate to the original. so it isn't something you'd want to display without the skin. I just started envying the accuracy, detail and benefits of the larger models. Reached a point where I'm doing soul searching as to whether to continue or just start over with one of the other kits.

The triplane has become the plane he's identified with, but I've actually started liking the Red Baron's Albatros better. Just looks faster, sleeker and sexier. But I'm scared of trying to build one.

I have to agree that the Albatros planes he flew were very cool looking. I built a 1:48 model of his Albatros DIII about 20 years ago. The only thing available at the time that was close to being accurate or to scale was the Glencoe kit. It was one of the worst kits I ever built. Many of the details were soft or nonexistent and it needed several innacuracies corrected. I remember reading a review in FSM that likened it to a vacuform kit. I had purchased about 3 of them but after completing the first I sold the others off. The one I did build came out fairly nice and is still on my shelf but I would never build another. Unfortunately I gave up modeling altogether about 15 years ago when I realized I didn't have time for it and that I had become more of a collector than a builder. I don't collect 1:18 planes but I am interested in WWI planes. If someone came out with an affordable line of 1:18 WWI planes I would definitely be interested. At the top of my wish list would be an Albatros and an SE5a.
