King & Country Hawker Hurricane Review

Post by Coreyeagle48 » Fri Aug 27, 2010 5:39 pm

Greetings:

Recently purchased the two King and Country Hawker Hurricanes. One of them is a limited run special scheme and the other is a more numerous but another limited piece. I decided on them after finding a good deal on them as a pair and I've never had a King and Country piece. The 1/30 scale is a nice size and the Hurricane is one of my favoriite planes.

Image

The Hurricanes come in a nice decorative box. The box is sturdy. The box shows the one Hurricane only no matter which Hurricane you actually got. I found the box graphics kind of neat, especially the old pictures.

Image

The model is well packed with foam inserts. For shipping, the propellor and canopy are stored seperately. The model and the corresponding parts are wrapped in clear plastic. Both airplanes arrived in perfect condition and were very secure in their boxes.

Image

The model setup is simple, just put the canopy on and insert the prop and you are good to go. There is a nonremovable pilot in the cockpit. The canopy can be positioned opened or closed. The propellor turns. There are no moving control surfaces nor does the landing gear retract. Due to it's polystone construction, the model is very sturdy and good weight. Paint application was excellent.

Another view of the model, the paint colors and markings seem to be correct based on a surviving Hurricane I've seen that flies to airshows around here. Markings are nicely done. If there are any drawbacks, it is the lack of moving parts, but the model makes up for it by being sturdy and easy to handle. Panel details could be a bit better, but are decent for the model. The pilot figure in the cockpit is a nice touch as well as having the cockpit being open or closed.

Just to show the two Hurricanes together. Getting two models at once, I was worried one would be perfect and another would have a problem, not true. Both models were well done with no problems out of the box. As expected.

And to compare the model to the real thing, a Hawker Hurricane from the Vintage Wings of Canada Museum at an airshow I was at.

In short, the high prices make the King and Country Hurricanes an investment. I was lucky to be able to get both at the same time and get a break on the pricing a bit. These are my first King and Country pieces and I like them. The detail is good, quality control excellent and the pieces sturdy and well built. If any improvement is needed, it would be more moving parts in the future and panel detail could be better. I'm very happy with both Hurricanes and hope to add the Spitfire to join them as well as possibly some of the figures. I won't collect the entire King and Country line, but these little Hurricanes were a good fit for my collection.

Great review Corey.

Could you tell us the prices of these, or comparable models.

The "polystone" construction seems like a very different approach, but K and C seem to get very favourable reviews.

Very unique.Just wouldn't want to drop one though.

Greetings:

I paid about $140 for each of them. I bought them from a seller who happened to have both and he gave me a bit of a break on the prices. The one model usually does go for higher than the other as it's a more limited edition.

The Corgi 1/32 Hurricanes are about the same price range, most of the K & C models I've seen run between $130 and $180 depending on the runs of the model. I wanted a "Battle of Britain" Hurricane and these were actually cheaper than the comparable Corgi models I would have wanted. As I don't really play with my stuff, I can live with the non movable stuff.

The construction seems sturdy, the biggest highlight of these models is the paint quality, just flawless and they are a nice size, not too big, but not too small. I will greatly enjoy them in my collection.

I'd like to add their Spitfire at some point. I don't do much in the smaller scales, but I like these :)
