Bf-109G6 Reconfig

Post by Folkwulfe » Tue Sep 13, 2005 3:41 pm

I picked up one of the 21C 109G's Red Nose...and I have a few "issues" with the overall look. It's supposed to be a G6/R6, but it carries some of the "trop" features as well. I hate anything straight from the box...so here goes.... To start with, I want to change the canopy to the more common "erla haube" (sometimes wrongly called the Galland Hood) canopy. I've done some mods to smaller scales using photo-etched brass canopy frames and Thera-Form perspex, but this is the first time in such a larger scale. Should be interesting. I've already modded the landing gear to sit correctly, but I still don't like the way it looks. Of coarse, the paint is all wrong...I'm considering a mediterrainian scheme...say JG27. The G6 was very active in the '43-'44 timeframe Italian theatre. I'll also have to fabricate an antenna mast, IFF antenna, and DF loop...no biggie. The long range tank will also have to be spruced up a bit as will the centerline cannon muzzle in the spinner. I've even toyed (pun intended) in altering the tail to the taller wooden tail, but I think I'll leave that one alone...for now. Since the unbrella mounts are present I'm thinking a G6/R6 on the ready-line with open cockpit and the umbrella shading the seat...what do you think?

You may want to wait for the S2 BF-109G to come out and save yourself the trouble. 21c has said that some of the problems with the S1 version will be fixed with the S2 variant. (I remember the landing gear and antenna mast being mentioned by them.) However, if you enjoy a good custom project, then good luck on your modifications!

Gear

Post by digger » Tue Sep 13, 2005 4:06 pm

I know they are fixing the landing gear....or at least I think that was the word....
I think we decided the tail should be a little lighter but what else about the paint bothers you (aside the flying clown thing, which is enough for me  )? I thought it was an accurate scheme. I also thought the new canopy was later - like 10 or something. Not sure.

the Galland hood was very late war, seen on very late production G's and all K's. It's a cool looking hood but not sure how accurate it would be on the 21c 109.

Erla Haube Canopy

Post by Folkwulfe » Tue Sep 13, 2005 6:33 pm

According to a couple of references I have, the erla haube canopy actually started appearing on late model G5 aircraft in early '43 and, therefore, available on G6 aircraft. It wasn't until the G14 variant that it became standard. Some pilots disdained the erla haube canopy because there were rumors it was difficult to open in flight during an emergency. Early G6's had the tall radio mast, but the majority were equiped with the short mast, FuG 25A IFF whip antenna below and behind the cockpit, and the R-7 RDF loop behind the short mast of the fuselage spine. I too hate the "clown" coloration and believe there are several more interesting schemes that could be applied. As for the S2 109 from 21C, I'm saving that one for a repaint as "Karaya Ein" as the scheme is very close. Those of you familiar with the 109 will recognize that name.

Surprising

Post by Folkwulfe » Tue Sep 13, 2005 7:06 pm

I am surprised that there are not more "customizers" on this site. Although the offerings are pretty good straight from the box, I need that little extra in mine. There are two 190's undergoing alteration, mainly to the landing gear to make them sit properly, a Thunderbolt in repaint, and now the 109. I also dabble in 1/6th scale and finished a "Littlebird" remake after almost a year off and on. I couldn't stand the fact that 21C would repaint a Hughs 500D in Vietnam colors and expect it to pass muster. So I cut, fabricated, soldered, painted, and just plain dogged one into a much more accurate OH-6A Cayuse that won 2nd place Custom catagory last year at a GI Joe Show in Houston, TX. See for youself...skies the limit!!!

Oh, there are lots of fabulous customizers on this site. They are just "incognito" right now. On the original XD main site there was a page for members to display there stuff.

I'm not sure if this is feasiblle on this site. You'd have to ask the powers that be. It would be cool to have one here, that's for sure. However, it might be a bit of an administrative hassle.

This brings up another thought - the new 21st century website has an area for this. I've been tryng to get my stuff together to inquire about it. So this might be the time to ask how we proceed? I have some nice customizations done & coming along.

Canopy

This, and all reference shots I've seen of this bird have the old canopy. I'm not sure about the improved canopy with this scheme

Repaint

Post by Folkwulfe » Wed Sep 14, 2005 5:36 pm

The object is to reconfigure the 109 into something besides straight from the box. Also, the repaint will remove Graf's markings (even though Graf did a short stint in the Med). There are several pictures available, some at the 109 Lair (walkthrough area) of G-6's with the erla haube fitted. I have also found references in "The Fighting 109" and "Messerschmitt At War" as well as Squardron Signal Publications detailing different variants and configurations. I haven't settled on one in particular...just sounding out the board. No diss on other customizers...I just haven't seen alot of projects and was wondering. Maybe we should start a new thread...?

custom job

Post by digger » Thu Sep 15, 2005 5:00 am

Ahh...OK, if the scheme is going to be different all the way (and you're not scared of making the EH canopy) then I'm sure not going to advise you otherwise. Plane customs are awesome they just scare me as a vehicle guy.

I think many of the customizers don't have the time like they used to, or don't post much here anymore as the board moves towards an information site and a place to ask for things. TD & Jason show us there stuff but I have to admit I am guilty of not updating my webshots folder in months. A new thread wouldn't be a bad idea but I think we will need a sweet custom to kick it off. I made my own COED b/c there is no WM around here so when I replace my digi camera (which I dropped  ) I will post some pics. Nothing special but man a little plain XD can go a long way. :) Anyway, that sucker is not going to carry a thread so if anyone's keeping a project close to the vest now is the time to break it out :D
