First Pics of Tomcat Crew Figure

Post by Bruzilla » Mon Jul 19, 2010 3:36 pm

I just got the initial rough of the pilot figure for my Tomcat. It's been fitted for the front and rear seat, and slides in and out pretty easilly. We made them with a wire rod coming out of the arms, which slides into a hole in the shoulder area. I put a small ball of modeling clay into the hole, which holds the arms in place while still allowing you to reposition them once the figure is in the cockpit, which is pretty nice. I'm going to use a section of steel guitar strings, painted black, to make the O-mask hose.

Next it needs to get sanded and finished, then it'll be ready to copy. Then I have to make new arms for the RIO. BTW, for all you eagle-eyed folks out there, you'll see something mounted to the right of the PRC-90 radio pocket of the SV-2. That's a standard Navy angle head flashlight that I added. Every P-3 crewman carried one there, so I added it to this guy. I don't know if F-14 personnel carried one there, and if they didn't, I'll remove it from the final figures.

BOTH of the DML F-14 Tomcat pilot figures (in 1/6th) have the angle-headed flashlight mounted right where you put it...immediately to the right of the PRC-90 vest pocket.

It was one of those things I ended up second guessing myself on. I looked at the LPA and knew something was missing, and it dawned on me it was that flashlight. Then I thought about how it was only held in place by velcro, and thought it would not be the sort of thing you want chasing you around during an ejection if it came loose, so I thought they might not carry one there. But, looking at some pics, they carry them just like we did.

Found an oopsie! We didn't want to detail facial features, and my plane is going to be displayed in combat and firing an AIM-9, so the visors are going to be down... but the visor knob was placed at the top of the visor cover. Eeek! I'll be moving the knob to the bottom.

I'm also missing the pig tail connector on the back of the helmet, which I'm going to have wired in once the figure is connected to the seat, so that'll be another mod for version II. :D
