Has anyone out there in the U.S.A. ever shipped a 1/18 plane to Brazil? I got a quote from UPS to ship a 1/18 F-16 from Indiana to Brazil. And the quote $675.62
What The Heck? Am I missing something?

That's about right. I looked at USPS and this was their price:
This was the only option that was given.
Global Express Guaranteed® (GXG)*
Maximum Value for Contents: $2,499.00
Max. length 46", width 35", height 46" and max. length plus girth combined 108" 1 - 3 business days $687.00
It's crazy.

I would not send anything of value USPS to Brazil. If you had to ship something, I would use a private courier like FedEx.

you can't even trust USPS for domestic shipping. They have cost me about $300 in broken stands. My closest UPS/FEDEX is drop off is 30 miles away. USPS has me hooked.

I would check with USPS. The size is going to get you but should be much cheaper than UPS. I ship all around the world (including domestic shipping) using USPS and unless you have an account with the "other guys" I would stick with the Post Office.
Also, get insurance too.

shipping to brazil should be the same as for australia etc and only a little more than for austria. So, it should be around $70 or so. Check at your local post office....no way it's in the hundreds of dollars with USPS.

Hi,
I agree with some of the previous posters. Your best option is the USPS with insurance. That said, better make sure the outer box is less than 108" otherwise they may refuse to accept the parcel. I think the maximum measurements for some countries are even smaller. I'd box it up, ask them the cost to ship it Express Mail (comes with tracking number and $100 of insurance) and see what the finally cost is. My guess is around $75 US or so.

P.S. The other guys charge you more cause they have to clear customs for you without bringing in a broker. That said, I still dont think it would cost $675 to go with UPS. More likely, two to three times the cost what USPS will charge you...

Aside from Etailers, has anyone actually gotten any money out of USPS insurance coverage? I remember when a box I had insured did not arrive somewhere it was a joke to try to get reimbursed.

well brazil is a 3rd world country My next door neighbor is from there and she says that me and my wife cant go there unless she is with us because we will get mugged or kidnapped without native escort. when i found out they don't have A/C there was no fight. corruption is real bad there.
i wouldn't doubt high pricing but a lot of your pricing is size. airplane tickets are 1800, not cheap and brazil and the US are not on the best terms either.

I sold a BBI Apache helicopter in the box and shipped to Brazil for $50.00. I shipped it priority international and have shipped many items to Brazil with no problem. The key is to box very well and I always print out large legible shipping label. Insurance is a joke and have never offered it. Blacksnakes make sure when you ship you adhere to the 79 inch limit. That is length plus the size all the way around. Also limit is 42 inches long by priority international. I just measured my in box f-16 and if you can find exact box at 36 inches long and 10 inches wide on both sides that is below 79. To ship a 9lb box to Brazil is $50.50 by priority international. Some countries are 108 inch limit. Brazil is 79 inch

Good comments on here from guys who sell and ship.
Obviously something very wrong with the $675 quote.
Box size and weight will be critical factors in the cost.
Anything over 2kg shipped from the UK gets ridiculous.Anything under 2kg is fairly reasonable.

Snake i know first hand what you are talking about. i bought some warhammer 40k books on ebay and i had to drop the duplicates and have the seller only send what i actually needed from the lot because the shipping went over 80 USD because of weight. nearly double i what paid for the lot.

I appreciate all of the responses.
I checked with USPS and got a price qoute for $99.00. That's a little better than UPS
Only problem is there would be no room for packing material in the box.
I ask you, would you pay $99.00 to have an F-16 shipped to you in a box with no packing material?
All this trouble and the plane has not even sold yet

Sometimes a snug fit is actually best, especially if the box is strong.

i used to sell some xd planes and always wrapped them in skin tight boxes. They are well packaged inside the box by the manufacturer and all you need to really do is protect the clear windows. So i wouldn't worry about that.
$99 still sounds high to me. It should't be much more than it is to europe...maybe 15% higher. You could look into sufrace shipping rates. I've sent lots of things to Brazil by surface and they usually arrive in about 5 weeks....never had a problem. Surface should be less than half the cost of airmail.
i never met an airplane i didn't like...

Remember, UPS 1st class size is a maximum of 108 inches. Running a tape completely around.... length + side + length + side.
USPS max is 130 inches.
Max weight is 70 pounds.
As to packing, I use Fedex because I have had UPS gorilla trash boxes of all size.
That said, I just send a 1/6 tank in a custom made box by Fedex (for some serious money). My own packing was dozens of parts packed inside the hull in plastic bags along with the turret and barrel. All inside the hull, covered openings with cardboard. Put the entire vehicle in a plastic bag tied with rope. All this put in the box with plastic wrap and a ton of peanuts.
Last night, the buyer wrote me that the box arrived trashed, no packing at all left. My plastic bag, tied with rope arrived perfect. No damage to the tank.
All this to say, no shipper is immune to trashing a box. Pack yourself securely even if a pro packing does it for you.
I'd have nightmares sending a big plane intercontinental.

1st there is no surface shipping.Aferg what carrier did you use as USPS has definitely no surface overseas. That was discontinued a long time ago. To send USPS it is priority international, express mail international or global express. No other carrier sends surface overseas. First class international is the slowest and has 4lb limit and is not surface.
TTT 130 inches is incorrect for USPS. To ship to Brazil and some countries like Australia it is 79 inches. To ship to Brazil you would have to send global express to get 108 inch limit which is $450.00.
http://ircalc.usps.gov/MailServices.asp ... =6&p=8&o=0
Here is 8lb example to Brazil. Clearly shown is 79 inch limit.

Unfortunately, the only way to send an F-14 to Brazil is by UPS or FedEx at a cost of about $650-$700. We've tried a few times ourselves. ):

I am going to have to disagree with Foxhole Toys. I have a F-16 mib and just measured. The box you will need is 35 inches in length and 11 inches on all sides. Even 10 1/2 will work for 2 sides. Add this up and that totals 79 inches length plus girth. To ship priortiy international max is 79 inches for priority international to Brazil and as mentioned before this is not $500.00 I am a power seller and top seller on Ebay and ship all over the world. I dont like self glorification but I am an expert at USPS and what can be shipped and how.

I think $687 is just a normal price for the shipment. You just have to consider the maximum price of the item and the size. If it is over or higher than the required size then you have to pay more. Anyway, the size of the item is not that big.
