In 1:18 scale, what would the actual wingspan of a B-17 be?

(Right, I'm too lazy to do the math ... heck, somebody should create a iPhone app to create scale measurements.)

i wagged it with a calculator....103 (feet) divided by 18....is
5.77777........................did i do that correctly? roughly 5.5 feet wide?

or am i waaaaaay off?

Holy Grail

B-17 Flying fortress. For display on ceiling.

I am saving up for someone to make one for me. I will have the funds by the end of the year.
Not sure what would be a fair price but I am thinking around $2500.00 or more.

There is a 1:18 E.A.M. kit that is available to use as a starting point.

I need lots of detail on the outside.
Retractable gear.
No detail required on the inside.
No pilots or crew.
No ground equipment.


Would make a nice Christmas present for 2010.

You guys are right, the B-17 would be one super plane to have in 1/18! The wingspan would be massive, but I am not sure if the 5.5 feet figure is right. As a model maker I can't imagine making a plane that big, plus all that resin!

While SkyWorks doesn't have a B-17 in the works, we do have some awesome models in the pipeline! I know of 3 right now that will blow you away, and I am not kidding! I should be able to say something soon, but until then just know that they were mentioned quite a few times on this thread, and are not all old warbirds!!!

The picture with the kid is awesome ... somehow I feel we all would love to be him and hold that giant bird!

Even 5' begins to get unreal ... I'd have to buy my neighbor's house, knock most of it down (to get an airstrip) and keep a bit to keep the model the rest of the year when it is cold and rainy. It is a *fun* fantasy!

Wingspan: 103' 9" = 5' 9.2" (1.757m)
Length: 74' 4" = 4' 1.6" (1.259m)
Height: 19' 1" = 1' 0.8" (0.323m)

I'm actually a tad shorter than the 1/18 wingspan

Is there no love for the just-as-beautiful Lancaster?

Though the wishlist is long and includes some fantastic and improbable choices,

my holy grail would be the A-10

Looks like the clear winners are the A-10 Warthog, the F-4 Phantom II, and the P-39 Aracobra.

What would you consider a fair price for a kit of these? How about a full finished and painted version?

I would consider paying a price range of $1,000 to $1,500 for a fully finished and complete 1/18 scale A-10 Warthog. As for a kit version, I would say about the $600-$700 range.


For those prices the features/details that I would expect at a minimum on a 1/18 scale A-10 would be:

Detailed Cockpit with opening canopy

Plug in landing gear that offer the option of gear deployed or retracted

At least a true combat load of ordinance
(A-10s don't fly combat with tons of ordinance like you see them portayed with on models, paying attention to this should help keep the model's cost down and be accurate at the same time.)

Other things I think would be neat to have, but I wouldn't expect are:

Optional boarding ladder

Accesible re-fueling station

I'm a huge A-10 fan so it would be awesome to see one finally made in 1/18 scale.

I am a big A-10 fan as well but it is hard for me to to justify more than 500 dollars for anything. it would have to be amazing!

i would rather wait and hope BBI does it they make good stuff.

You probably did. It was the prototype 21st made around 6 years ago and never followed through with. It was up for bid on e-bay a little while back starting at $6,000 dollars.

what is BBI doing are they making anything anymore, I mean what is new in in the 1/18 lines other than the tomcat?

There isn't much "confirmed" product in 1/18 scale right now. A lot of old "proposed" product though. bbi is pretty much dead in 1/18 scale now.

on one hand that would be really awesome but on the other it so big it is almost like what is the point. where do you put it, I don't know how many of you guys have wives But I know my wife is very supportive of my hobby but seriously. I mean maybe if i had a museum or i was an eccentric millionaire with like a gymnasium for my 1:18 scale stuff other wise thats kind of insane, or maybe i am just being to rational.

any way there was bunch T-6 owners but only 3 ordered not enough to justified production ,but to tell you the truth what we have now cooking is much more exiting

Jack is right, while he could not justify the T-6 production, what he does have in store for everyone is MUCH more exciting, and I think everyone will agree! As for release dates, they are not set yet so I can't say how many will come out at one time.

I'm with you 100%. There are so many variants that could be produced. Anything from the early D model to the later Q models the Russians hot rodded out by stripping them down. I have a bunch of collectibles that are waiting to be sold to fund a P-39 when someone steps up and finally makes one available.
