My mom supports it but says I do go overboard with my "Toys" , I dont have a Wife, I do not have a "GirlFriend" But any friends that are Girls think it is boring (THey just do not understand the beauty), My friends think my room is awesome!

Oh and they are NOT Dolls.... Just highly articulated action figures.....

So what do your "Peoples" Say about our hobby?

LOL, I have heard that so many times it's almost not funny. Almost. I'm glad I'm not alone in dealing with wives' sarcastic comments when it comes to collecting.

"Another big box" indeed.... you guys don't know what "big box" is until you start collecting 1/6 vehicles. The last monster box I had delivered, was so heavy I had to wait for my son to come over and "Mr. Muscles" unpacked the half track and put it in place in my "toy and dolly" room and there it sits. At 60 pounds it is pressing track marks in the carpet. That is the last monster (3' x 5' box) I'll order that is not RC.

But I digress......

The wifey is O.K. with my stuff. My room is my castle. She even surprised me when I bought a 9 plane collection and told me to put a couple of Stukas in the living room on the TV cabinet.

Mrs. TTT suffered for years with my collecting 1/1 military vehicles until she actually got to like them all over the yard and filling the garage. Up to 10 running and not. Now, all I say is "What's it gonna be, my 1/18 and 1/6 toys or the real thing"...... Lots of Humvees and duece & a 1/2s around Ft. Dix....... to point out and say "I always wanted a Humvee...... I just saw one, only $40,000..... great buy". That shuts her up about my "toys and dollies"....

My Grandcrumsnatcher is now 5 and old enough to know what GI Joe stuff he can play with and what 21C and DML stuff he can't.

Strangers always give my room "OMG" and "Fantastic" comments. I'm happy.

A mixture of perplexion, annoyance, and interest from among my family members. My dad is probably the biggest fan of what I collect, however. I've let him "borrow" three of my planes to hang in his office (including my 21c Boyington Corsair) and he even brings the occasional friend or co-worker over to my house to "see the planes"

As otsketton alluded to, but also you could be down at the strip bar throwing money at the girls, and or spending all your money on alcohol.

...or worse drugs. Maybe even twittering about nothing.

Plenty of other addicting things that are truly a waste of time and money.

You could be collecting comic book or movie figures which many of us do and I would say are even more frowned upon by females in general.

At least military toys have true history behind them and in my book that's a notch above any other toy.
When someone sees your Flying Tiger or your Tiger tank they may ask about it and get a history lesson.
Too many kids and adults don't know diddly squat about the great events and the machines of the not too distant past.

GF's should accept you for you. Wives should've accepted you for you long ago. Mother's love you regardless. Friends are likely to give you $#!^ for anything you enjoy that they don't.

I just got my balls busted for wearing jorts the other day... I had no idea they were that bad. *shrugs*

My gf doesn't give me too much trouble about anything so long as I don't go nutty with my spending and put myself into a bad situation. Controlling your spending is the key... That's the key with anything you enjoy really. Financial responsibility is important. I do a Christmas Club so I don't go overboard at the holidays. I set pretty strict budgets for my hobbies...

I just bought my first 1:16 RC tank this week (arrives Friday, I think) because I've managed my money well enough that I decided I had an extra $100 to plunk down.

When I don't have extra, or when prices raise, I re-evaluate my spending... For instance, 21st's stuff bumped up in price there at the end, so I cut back. What do I REALLY want vs. what do I just simply want? The 88 was taking a backseat then. Star Wars figures went from $5.99 to $6.99 to $7.99... Each year I cut back some.

If you're responsible, taking care of your needs first (survival, debts, etc.), you're good... I got a bitchin' TV for Christmas this year for my girlfriend, $1400 DLP 1080p HD for $800... I paid it off quickly, no interest, and now enjoy HD hockey and football. I wouldn't have done that though if I didn't have a plan on it. And since I did, I can feel secure that I'm not doing a disservice to myself and my future financially, and nobody can really complain about what I spend my extra money on or how I spend it. And fortunately for me nobody does really.

forgot to disclose my ace-in -the-hole.....when "she who must be obeyed" raises an eyebrow at my newest delivery, i look up, stare off into the distance, and say" hm. there's always civil war reenacting. battle of new market reenactment is coming up- saw a replica rifle online for 500 bucks......" i even went as far as looking online for a ford expedition to replace my explorer. wife looking over my shoulder asked why...because i need the horsepower to haul a civil war reenactor cannon and trailer. loooonnnnng pause. how mcuh is that? she asks....10k for the trailer, 35k for the cannon. lonnnnger pause-where you gonna put the cannon? i look her square in the eye, and state, guess you'll just have to park the minivan out in the driveway............shhhhhh, that is still a touchy subject around these parts......

This question comes up from time to time... I'm lucky, my Wife is very supportive of my hobbies. Both of our Fathers and my Uncles served during WWII. So that history is part of our lives.
As a kid I built models from the era and then started collecting WWII military items, mostly German.
When 1:18th 21st came out in 2000 I was hooked, it was ready for display...no glue, no paint, but I still cut up a few and do customs......
Friends..., most are my age and have/had parents who were involved in WWII in one way or another...good and bad... and think the models and figures(1:18th) along with the 1:1 stuff are respectful of what that generation went through.

I had the best reason to get started.....
My son received the first P-51 in 2000 for Christmas to hang from in his room. Then we got the 109, Stuka, P-38, and so on and so on..... When we remodeled he asked me to keep them in my office/man cave. Who was I to say no. Now 10 years later +/- the family has grown to accept daddy's hobby. I can do what I want as long as I keep funding it with the side money I make.

This year my wifed asked if we can make the WWII Weekend in Reading, PA a family event for 2011 (2010 my son and I are going with the Boy Scout troop). All in all my family is very supportive, and I am happy.

Dumb but lucky as I am, my mum really supports me collecting 1/18th aircraft. She even has paid for several models, when I really wanted them (like for the Cobra last month), but was completely broke.

My best friend (which, surprisingly, is a girl!) is amazed by my models. She fell for my F-16 & F-14 when she first saw them. She even stays awake until early in the morning to support me when I'm bidding on another 1/18th model.

My other friends are completely stunned when they see my room... many of them are impressed, others fear for their lives because they think that one of these birds is coming down on them

ah... yeah, I almost forgot someone: my girlfriend.
she likes my planes, and is happy that I rather search online for new planes than for porn XD
